Here in Nevada we have mule deer youth hunts where the kid can hunt all three seasons(bow, muzzleloader, rifle) on the same tag until it is filled. We have been working daily on the archery portion, but now we have to think of getting the kid a muzzleloader. Nevada law stipulates the minimum caliber of .45 and OPEN SIGHTS ONLY. After shooting his CVA Squirrel last weekend, he really wants to stick with the traditional sidelock style. With the open sights, we are DEFINITELY talking under 100yds, well under 100yds. Now, Kody weighs only around 84lbs so I am looking for something that doesn't weigh a ton or kick like the proverbial mule. Definitely want to hit the used market first to try to find something. What do you guys suggest....45 or .50? Twist rate? Suggestions of specific models would be greatly appreciated, as well as ones to avoid.
Thanks again,
Jim
