Bought my 8x58r

Bought my rolling block I've been looking at with the help of guys on here. Now to start some load work ups but will probably just use Dutchmans unique load to start and stay safe. Guy gave me 10 rounds of ammo to start with but the numbers looked to hot to me. Confirmed by a great guy on here so will take them apart and reload with a more appropriate charge. Thanks sooo much for the help Henrik....you are a guy I wish I could shoot a few rounds with. Since I'm in California guess that may never happen.

The simplest way to go is 8x56R Hungarian brass, anneal and fire form. Neck size with a 8x57 Lee Collet die. about the only loads I have been using is 4759 from about 17 to 20 grains. I have used the Lee .324 and Lee .329 and NOE 326471 215 gr.

18gr 4759 shot best in mine with the Lee .329 boolit. I tried BP but it holds a bunch and fowling was horrendous.

The Danes loaded 73grains BP as a pellet placed in the case before necking down, to start that they added 7 grains of fine bp in the cavity.
That was with a jacketed 227gr bullet mind you.

So what is the best way to fire forming. New to any kind of forming brass and not sure about how to go about it. I've only know of just shooting a round already made to fire forming to a rifle. Than there's the cream off wheat thing. Now that's entirely new to me and not sure how to go about that. 7.62x54r looks pretty close to almost ready to go for 8x58r but so does 8x56r just not as long of as neck. I have 45-70 on hand because I also just bought as trapdoor. The 8x56r I guess gets fire formed so what is the best way it go about it.

The beauty is that cases headspace on the rim so even grossly undersized cases will form to perfection.

I load the 8mm MAX bullet cast 94+3+3 with a check to @1850fps.
If you spill the beans regarding what you got for bullet and powder then i'll ask Quickload for a guess to where you are regarding a load.

As an aside here is my 17 Hornady Hornet before fireforming.
They are 22 hornet that is necked down and shortned.
I think i lose 1% due to splits.

So one is parent case then one after run through die then one shot through rifle. Is that correct...I understand fire form a correct case. Except some make it sound like you can load up a 8x56r case with some powder and cream of wheat stick it in gun and...bam...8x58r Fire formed brass except shorter. The 7.62x56r sounds like you just run through die load her up and have some target practice. Cost is less and easier to come by. Some of us can't get old bullets for 2 or 3 for a dollar...even if I could can't find Berdan primers.

That thing must have been cookin out of there. Did they give data on how fast that was traveling. Want to try to load up some black powder rounds but want to get her up and running first.

Nah BP is slow, quotes from 1540-1645fps from various sources depending on charge used.



You'll have to do some metric to imperial to get the gist of it!

Even when jacketed bullets are used the BP will foul bad in no time flat.
Remember there is no lube at all to soften the fouling.

Nice now i have the dimensions of round. Like i said before want to try to stay around 1300 1400 until I get used to rifle. Than kick it up to your load and stretch her out a little. My 8mm max showed up today so since its supposed to rain this weekend will start some boolit pouring for this and the trapdoor. Still want to sneak out and try to fire form that brass so I'll get a little wet.

BP fouls really bad. IIRC the case holds 73grs or so in the brass I had. The 4759, if you can find any gives good accuracy and about the FPS you are looking for with that boolit.

That is one of the problems I see with this round. There really is no load data (printed) to start you out. Thanks to everybody here I have opinions to get me going. There is a gun show here in a couple weeks so can pick up powder I need. I have quite a few different powders now but want to get the best one for this round with safety, speed, and accuracy in mind.

Generally I am not much of a roller fan however, I DO like that rifle! Well done sir and good luck on your load development. That's where the fun is. Anyone can go to Wally World and buy ammo.

I started forming brass from 7.62x53r but still need to fire form. Hopefully tomorrow if theres a small break in rain. Round on left is one that has been shot in rifle so you can see where rest need to go. Loaded with 14gr unique and I'm going to load a couple up with unique cream of wheat fire a couple first and see witch one forms best. One day may try some 8x56r but would have to order those but found some lapua 7.62x53r for a great price so will see how that works out. I'm new to this forming brass thing so what sound simple to some has me shaking in my boots.

That info is from the 1890's and i suspect that few if none at all of the militarys cartridges conform to CIP SAAMI and require their approval.
