Making Red-N-Tacky liquid

My question is, what does it take to make Lucas Oil Red "N" Tacky into a liquid?

I had my Truck Lubrication Pump fail, you know, the round cylinder with the lever hand pump, while crawling around lubing the zerks the other day. The plunger locked up, and after taking it apart and not being able to fix it, I dug the grease out and put it in an empty clean tin can. Messy!!!

Instead of throwing it out, I thought I would make some lube out of it. I wanted to start by melting it. Giving it a go, it didn't really even slump under 212°F!

I then took the heat gun (outside) to see what it would take to make the gooey red lube melt and slide down the inside of the can. It didn't budge! It did give a hint of smoke, so I stopped in that area and made bigger circles with the heat gun. Nothing.

That Lucas stuff is amazing...but??? You guys that have used it to make lube, what is the correct way to proceed?

Long slow heat is what I do to make Ben's Red. It does take awhile and that's from fresh from the tube stuff. Good luck with your older stuff

I’m guessing here but you might have to use a solvent to help the process.

Yes, I meant liquid, as in ...getting it to melt down to a liquid to mix with Beeswax. Earlier, I wasn't having any luck the way I was doing it.

Now, I have it and the correct amount of beeswax heating in a crock-pot most of this evening. It's working now. Earlier, on my first try, I expected results too quickly. This Lucas product is tough stuff! I think I am on the right track now. Maybe I'll get a usable bunch of stick lubes out of it. At least I am good at casting hollow stick lube.

Winter fun. We will see how this turns out.....

toluene and xylene will dissolve paraffins. red and tacky is composed with paraffin oil according to the label on red and tacky spray lube. might try a little grease mix it with some toluene or xylene and see if that works

Double boiler is what I used to make Ben's red. The grease went in first, for a looong time not sure if it ever fully liquified. I think it got to the point I could stir the other ingredients in to the mixture.

It doesn't melt ... I make Lithi-Bee L:ube with Lucas R-N-T .
1 Part - Lithium Grease ( Lucas R-N-T )
3 parts - Beeswax
parts are by weight
In an old crock pot on high the beeswax will melt ... the Lucas R-N-T will not melt but only softens . With a large wire whisk , blend them together ... mix until you get tired ... turn off pot and let cool .
Repeat the heating - whisking and cooling process again ...
Then do it a third time to insure complete homogenation (mixing)
Now you got some great soft lube ... too soft , add a little Gulf Wax to stiffen .

Since I started using Lithi-Bee ... No Leading in handguns or 30-30 rifle loads .
Garth Choate gave me the recipe and thought it better than NRA 50/50 Alox-Beeswax after the formula for Alox was changed ... I believe he was right !
and... keep the crock pot lid and a fire extinguisher handy ... just in case !

You don't melt it to make lube . You heat it and stir it into your already melted wax and other ingredients . I did that at 160 degrees when I used it to make Bens Red lube. You never want it hot enough to smoke or your lube is ruined.

Yours is the posting I saw earlier and yesterday I was following (mostly has worked. Later tonight I will pour some hollow sticks and at some point will be testing how much I like the lube. I still have a dozen or so LBT Blue sticks. That is my standard to judge smokeless cast rifle loads by.

Lithi-Bee is great for Handguns ... I don't shoot much rifle ...
Good Luck on finding replacement LBT Blue !
I was lucky when I wanted to order more Lithi-Bee lube ... Choate Machine & Tool was still in business ... out of the lube making business ... but Garth kindly gave me the easy to make recipe ... maybe you can track down someone from LBT ...
A shame to let the good LBT lubes /recipes just disappear !
