    Full bore Lyman 525 slugs

Played around with the fullbore Lyman 252 pellet style slugs today. Accuracy was good at 50 yards. Gun used was a Mossberg 835 with a cylinder choke. I shot two different versions: the light version with a deep hollow base and the heavy version with a ‘normal’ depth hollow base.

The light version weighs in at an average of 643 grs. The heavier slugs averaged 682 grs.

I used 34 grs of Steel powder and 31 grains for Blue dot. The slug stack up and recipe goes as follows:

    Hull: 2.75” Fiocchi
    Primer: Fiocchi 616
    Powder: Steel/Blue Dot
    Charge: 34 grs/31 grs
    Gas seal: x12x
    1/2” fiber wad
Hard nitro card under the slug.

Both slugs using Steel powder avg. around 1230 fps.

Both Blue Dot loads ran around 1070 fps.

I ran these loads using 35 grs of Blue Dot and 38 grs of Steel. Those were dangerous loads coming in over 20,000 psi. That’s why I went by to the drawing board and decreased powder charge.

31 grs of Blue Dot and 34 grs of Steel powder seems to be the ticket. The Steel powder loads exhibited way more felt recoil.

You can measure your pressure? It rhymes, and I'm envious!

Thanks for the info! That's quite eye-opening to see they were peaking to 20kpsi with only mid-30s loads.

I'm guessing you have one of the newer lots of Steel powder?

Do you see much difference in deformation between the standard and thick skirt?

Honestly, I never had any skirts to deform on any pellet slug. Even with the standard 525, I get 5 shots touching and that’s without adding filler in the base.

I haven’t broken in to my newer lots of Steel powder. Still using what in bought from 2015-ish.

are you saying with the 525 slug and 34 grains of blue dot was too high a pressure? Thats what im shooting using that slug.I shot 34 grains of bluedot with the accurate 700s slug but now im concerned its dangerous or am i missing something?

These are larger than the Lyman 525. These are full bore slugs.

No mention of leading the barrel with the full bore. Is this not a problem?

    I'm with Mr. Bus above.
Lyman's Shotshell Reloading manual shows BlueDot at 44 grains using the (same weight/shape) Lyman 525 sabot slug,
    (tho'be it WW hull/wadcup)

    Rather dramatic disconnect somewhere....
