On my scope
I have the Burris Z-ring set up and have the .020 shims in and still can't get my scope to get the height I need
I have the + 20 on bottom and the -20 on top so you would think I should have gained some.
Any suggestions?

That's a head scratcher.
Just a shot in the dark, but you might try a different brand of rings.

Add -20 in the rear?
Put a 2x4 block under the front of the mount?

I had this same problem years ago, if I Rember correctly ?
I put a shim under the front scope mount, between the mount and the barrel ?
I am in error, as i stated, this it is backwards; the shim goes under the rear base.

So you have the signature z rings. the standard zee rings are all metal.
Is the +.020 on the bottom of the rear ring?
If you dont have extra shims, tou can put the -0.020 shim on the bottom of the front with a 0 on the top of each. The only time you have to have +0.020 and -0.020 as a pair is when you have them vertically in the rings. On bottom, you can pair them with a 0. Done it several times as a bottom with 0 at top.
If you happened to put the +0.020 shim on the bottom of the front ring, you went the wrong way and cost yourself 20" of travel.
You need to lower the front of the scope and/or raise the rear of the scope to get more up available in the scope.
How exactly do you have your shims positioned.
I have never had an issue where I needed more than 0.020 shim added.
Do you have a 20, 30, or 40 Moa insralled backward on the rifle?
What rifle, base and setup do you have?

what he said /\ /\ ,try swapping them around just to make sure they arent reverse of where should be.... a collimeter/bore sighter is your friend here, allows you to see what the heck is going on without fireing a single round.

Sounds like I messed up
I thought I had to use the same offset for each ring (+'- .020 for example)
My set up is a Zastava M85 in 222 Remington caliber
I have a 1 piece picatinny scope base and the Z-rings
the scope is a Weaver 3-10, a nice scope really

White eagle, That is what they recommend and if the shims are in any orientation other than horizontal, they must be used as pairs.
I have successfully used +/- shims with 0's when the shims were horizontal and in the bottom half of the ring.
If you don't have 2 pair of 0.20 shims, try the - 0.020 in the front and the + 0.020 in the back. if you feel more comfortable using them as pairs, you can pick up an extra set and replace the 0's on the top later.
If you have no more "up" left, you have to point the scope downward to get back some of your 'up'.
Good luck, it can be frustrating chasing optics problems.

Is your POI higher than your POA, or is it lower ?
If the POI is higher, then either the front of the scope needs to be higher; or the rear of the scope lower.
If the POI is lower, then the opposite of above is indicated.
But, it may not be the rings/bases at all !
Some of the newer short-tubed scopes run out of elevation adjustment before zero is achieved.
Those scopes generally have a wider windage adjustment range than the elevation adjustment range.
Once upon a time, I had just such a scope, and I solved it via rotating the scope 90-degrees counter-clockwise (as viewed from the rear) so the old windage adjustment became the new elevation adjustment, and the old elevation adjustment became the new windage adjustment.
That, however, will only work with scopes that have a crosshairs or 4-plex type reticle, and not with a more complicated reticle.

Now I lay me down to sleep
A gun beside me is what I keep
If I awake, and you're inside
The coroner's van is your next ride
yes the poi is below the poa
in other words my shots land below where I am aiming and the adjustment for elevation is pegged out, no more available

Thirty years ago, before Burris came out with the offset inserts (20MOA bases weren't readily available either), I needed more elevation for a scope/ rifle combo. What I did was cut shims out of a pop can to go between the rear base and receiver.
I don't remember how much one thickness of aluminum got me, but I do remember working the math using the iron sight formula substituting the base spacing for sight radius.
Robert
At the spacing of scope rings 0.001" is about 1" at 100 yards.
just installed my new 20 moa scope base, thanks 3-44's
without a doubt I will be trying it out in the next day or 2
