Handi-Rifle, ejector to extractor conversion?

I’ve noticed that some handi-rifle barrels have ejectors on them that throw the brass about 20 feet when you open the action & others have extractors that just sort of pull the spent brass out gently about 3/16”. Is there any way to convert from the ejector to the extractor? Is it just a matter of removing a spring or something? Are new parts needed? I don’t see any parts or options listed on H&R’s website. Any info is appreciated.

At least you are going the right direction Jim, if I recall correctly it is much easier to go from ejector to extractor, than the other way around.

I just crammed some cardboard on the side of roll pin that keeps the extractor from latching.
Easily done and removed if you want to revert back to extracting while hunting for a quick second shot as well.

Thanks, I do have a Handi-Rifle with a .223 bbl that does kick brass 20+ ft to the rear.

Shove a bit of paper so as the roll pin is downward.
Do the same on the other side and it stops the latch from engaging when close.

Gotta try that on a Stevens 301 12ga - I hate them damn ejectors cause I reload the hulls.

On my .243 I just pulled the ejector as instructed in the posts here. Dumored the offending ledge and propped up the rear pin (both sides with wood) as the gent did above with paper and Wa-La....perfect extractor...no more 20 foot launched brass...Thank you all for this thread.

I think I may do this on ALL my ejectors.
I've got a 22 Hornet that'll take your eye out. Probably kill a rabbit at 10 yds!

It was too easy to pull the mega strong ejector spring outta the Stevens 301 and replace it with a weaker spring of the same length and about the same diameter = instant extractor.

The pin to remove ...


One end of the pin is knurled for purchase in the pin hole ...


T'other end is smooth and that's where the punch goes ...
