Guys, check out that twist, way too slow for accurate long range. In a 40 you need something in the 16 twist to have a chance.
I was an RO at the world shoot at Camp Butner last Sep. One of the guys from the Spanish Team had a 40 and they didn't know the twist but he never got on target past 300yd. Frustrating to say the least for him and his team. I told them through the interpreter that they needed to figure out the twist or just bite the bullet and get the 45 Gibbs.

Yes the .40 cals or most likely 1:16 the .45 are 1:18 .

The early 40s were a slow twist. Later ones were 16 twist. They have probably been sitting on these for some time. I was looking at buying one of these till I found out the twist rate. You could get one then (about 08 or 09) for $1100.

This is absolutely correct.

The Brit. longrange small bore standard is 451 and everyone who shot the P. Gibbs shot their 45 -18T and did fine.
At that time - We had a lot of confusion, and then discussion among those who wanted a lighter recoiling rifle. The Gibbs in 40 cal was slow twist built for the Euro "short range" matches and not correctly set up for LR. This old 40 had - has a very limited market but was specific - purpose built. Eventually, to meet demand, Joe Hepsworth was able to get access to some limited production Gibbs rifles barreled with the same 16T barrels Pedersoli put on the 40-65 cartridge rifles. All Pedersoli 40 barrel production stopped shortly after.

buy it, reline it with a barrel liner. any twist but a 1/16 for a 40 is not good except for round ball. a relined barrel can out shoot many others because of the stiffness of the barrel and reduced barrel whip. at long ranges muzzle whip and the lack of it can win matches when all else done right.

Who relines barrels? Do they sleeve them? Did not know that was done.

taylor is a member here and he will make any gun you have shoot way beyond your dreams by relining it to your choise. again a relined barrel shoots better because their is very little barrel whip if any.

Shooting a .401 bore 1:16" twist I can tell you that a .412 bore 1:26" twist is mighty tempting.

I bought one of the 1-24” twisted ones as I didn’t know any better. Wondered if anyone knows if a 1-16” barrel would drop in and if it is even sold that way? The Pedersoli site is conveniently down for maintenance right at the moment.

Maybe you can call Bob Hoyt and see what it cost to have your barrel Relined to the twist you want.
He has done a bunch of barrels for me either rebored or sleeved back to the original caliber with the twist I wanted.

Having an extra left handed New Englander with two fifty caliber barrels I've been very tempted to have one reworked to .412 bore to use .41 diameter molds. If I ever finally make up my mind about what caliber.

Yep. This came up when I was considering buying a Gibbs and I was almost 'suckered in' by that sale.

And a .401 bore with 16" twist is still a pain in the breech.
