Now..................THAT"S a lot of lead! Interesting.
I worked in a heat treat department that used molten lead for a heating medium. The pots held 1300-1500 pounds of lead.
I always though that was a lot of lead until I saw this video.
bath tub ingots... They made BATH TUB INGOTS!!!!
Several decades ago there was an old guy here in Monroe who's goal was to build a 30'+ wood sailboat in his retirement. He constructed the cold molded hull and when it came time to make the keel, he built a mold in the shape of the keel, dug a hole in the ground and put the mold in the ground for support.
The lead was placed in an old cast iron bath tub and he built a big wood fire around it supplemented with torches. I wasn't there when the pour happened but my understanding it worked quite well but was not something the marina owner was ever going to let happen again.
Not sure if he ever got to sail it, lost track of him over the time.
Have another friend who is in the middle of building a 24' cold molded sailboat, never asked him what kind of keel he is putting on it. Haven't seen the boat since the great boat flipping last spring.

The boat is formed over a strongback upside down, then flipped after the hull is completed. You get a couple of cases of beer call up 15-20 of your buddies and have a boat flipping party.
There are times I just can't make this stuff up.
May have to stop over tomorrow and see his progress and find out if he is going to cast his own keel. If he is, I'll have to make a point of being there when he casts the keel.
He's hoping to sail it this summer, started it as his covid lockdown project. He turns 85 in less than 3 weeks, he better hustle up on the building.
I have been watch Leo rebuild that yacht for years. The keel guy is retired but that is what he did for 30 years. Going to be fun to see it done right.
The bath tub thing has nothing to do with what the experienced keel caster does or plans to do, rather it's what the the newbies are doing to correct their earlier screw up. I've been following these guys for quite a while.

I’ve heard the term bathtub gin, but never bathtub lead. Waiting to see part two.
For several years I worked in a manufacturing plant that made copper/brass radiators. I had thirty-eight tube mills that each had a four-thousand pound pot at one end of each tube mill. Do the math on that one. We ran three shifts five to six days a week.
I've been following this channel for years, you should'a seen the first try to just add to the existing keel, it was a heartbreak to see that beautiful 'Silver Stream' leaking out all over the ground!

I worked at an aluminum processing plant. The melter had a capacity of 146k lbs of aluminum. Two endloaders were required to fill it, and would take 2 days. The tinsel fairy was definitely in every ones minds, too.
I'm looking forward to the pouring process. Thais a lot lead !

What fun, what fun, hope all goes well
Mike
Was surprised the bathtub held that increase in weight and the additional heat of the lead. That was a big increase in both. Wonder how long it took to solidify and cool out. A lot of mass there to hold heat
