    338 whisper, 338 hush, 338 thumper?

Hi guys, perhaps I am not looking hard enough.

I am trying to find case drawings to see the difference between the 338 whisper (2 very different ones?), 338 hush (not sure) and 338 thumper (223 cut off at the shoulder?).

Can anyone tell me about the differences and pros and cons o each.

I am looking at build a 338 wildcat to shot big slugs slow, but can't get enough data on any of these like you can for commercial cartridges.

    Thanks

    Andy

Think Todd Spotti did an article for the 338 Whisper. Go to LASC site and go thru the articles he wrote. Can't remember if he talked about the other dimensions or not. Did you try the SSK site too.

In ctg of the world I believe they say the 338 whisper from SSK was a 7BR simply necked up . Maybe something like a Grendel or the 6.8 spc necked up may be workable for what you want with their smaller case capacity . The 338x223short would need to headspace on the case mouth . Simple way to go for a dual role rifle is the 338 federal with a faster twist barrel throated for the biggest bullet you plan to use that is if you want to shoot those big long 300 gr bullets ,easy to get brass and dies , just load it down for the subsonic stuff just like you would if it were a 308 win

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I understand what you are saying, I was actually considering a 5.6x50r necked up version a 338-5.6x50R so that it spaced on the rim, I don't like the thought of spacing on the mouth!

I will see if brass for the 338 fed is available down under, if it's not it kind of kills the cartridge off because getting it out of the states has become too hard, just about everything needs an export permit now, you want a $100 of brass sure, just give us $300 for an export permit.

Is 308 brass not readily available down under? 338Federal is the 308 necked up...

Oh forgive my ignorance, I am only really familiar with the 338 win mag and 338 Lapua.

I will have to look further at this less famous 338!

Don't worry about needing forgiveness. With the number of new cartridges which appeared in the last couple of decades, it's hard to keep up. I hadn't heard of the .338 Federal until someone offered me an Encore barrel in the cartridge. I snapped it up once I did a little searching on the web. Some (many?) of us here haven't heard of some .303 based wildcats which are unique to Oz.

P.S. Like the M-79 avatar. I understand it was referred in in Oz as the Wombat gun. Care to explain that one?

I would recommend the 338-08 (338 Fed). I use it to shoot 300 grain cast which I assume is what you want to do. A savage receiver and aftermarket barrel are an inexpensive solution!!!
