Cutting Up a Pig, what's your favorite method?

I got a good deal on this 20 or maybe 25 lb. pig of linotype.

    Attachment 63546

I want to make muffin ingots out of it, so I need to cut it into smaller chunks. I'll take a hack saw to it, unless someone has a better way to cut it up.

    Thanks!
    Jeff

I think a hack saw with a courser blade would be the way to go. I would cut it up in 1-2 lb. pieces and drop in in my pot unless I was going to alloy it.

When I was young and dumb, like maybe 12 years old, dad bought a bunch of these for about $.10/lb. I wanted to make slingshot projectiles and decoy anchor weights and had a really small 10 lb. pot. I learned after dropping the first one on the concrete floor of the garage that I just needed to put some gloves on and start swinging them at concrete. They should be brittle enough to break.

Take a hammer and chisel and notch one side about where you want to break a chunk off, then prop one end up on a 2X4 and give it a good whack and it'll break right at the notch.

edge of the neighbors steps works pretty well too.
notch them with the chisel and hit them right there, they'll break.

I got one that looks just like that for free a few weeks ago. Came from a race car, but mine seems to be soft

I grew up with a stack of those in outside the garage with a Linotype machine inside. After dad passed mom wanted the garage cleaned out. It all went to the scrapyard. Wish I knew then what I know now.

I gota say I thought long and hard when my friend said he used a carbide bladed miter saw..... Till I saw it. Works great, cuts great. he said the blade was too dull for wood, but man it would rip through that in about 5 seconds. Go pick up a cheap saw from harbor freight, and just use nice gentle pressure, it'll surprise you.

I busted one up one time about thirty years ago with a sledge hammer. It wasn't too bad.

I just hold them vertically until until they melt enough to lay down easily.

About the neighbors steps, please be sure they are concrete and not wooden.

I have pigs like that and I just lay one across two and use my old boy scout axe and a hammer. I hold the axe with the flat head up where I want the pig to break and whack it with the hammer. Usually one hit but sometimes more than one. I guess it depends on whether I had my cheerios that morning or not.
