Where to get alloy assay

My google-fu is coming up short. Does anybody on the forum have he ability to do an xrf assay on samples of alloy? What does it typically cost to get them run? Would I just ladle out a thin little splatter and mail it off or? Thanks in advance for the education.

there is a member on here that does them, I think BNE? I believe the deal was he charges 1lb of lead for each sample scanned, just send a small thumbnail sized piece.

Caliboose, look around your locale there where you live, and see if they have an industrial X-ray company close by! Those guys do PMI ( positive material identification), and most times, if no written report is needed, and they got a minute they “ shoot “ your alloy for free! Just snap photo of the screen on the gun, and now you got it! Just opinion, as I have done it repeatedly in the past.

As far as I know he still does it but I think got a promotion at his company so has way less time for it. Might take a few weeks to get back to you with results in other words. That's basically what he told me about a year ago when he last did some alloy for me. It's worth a try to ask him still.

I had samples tested at Rotometals, quick service, $70 for the first test, price reductions for more samples...my thinking was that if anybody know lead testing, it has to be them.

I wouldn't pay to get anything tested as a hobby caster and never saw the need to have anything XRF tested. I go by the BHN of the components and what they are supposed to be then add pewter assuming it is tin. All of my alloys end up at BHN +/- 0.5 and work as expected.

My local scrapyard has an XRF gun and I recently brought a handful of ingots and it was pretty interesting the results I got. It's not really gonna change anything for me but now I know I have 4% copper and my solder ingots are HEAVY in zinc for some reason
