OAL of book says 1.553"
One is in the crimp groove and one is set to 1.553" OAL. Needless to say, I'm confused.

Crimp them both now see which one doesn't fit your gun.
This is good so the oal recommendation does not apply
It is because the 358429 was designed for the .38 Special, not the .357 Magnum. When S&W built the first .357 Magnums, they did not lengthen the cylinders of their N frames.
Lyman recommended crimping over the driving band to make them fit in .357 short cylindered revolvers.

Personally, I’d set the crimp in the groove. If the bullet is set deeper, pressures rise in direct proportion to the depth
Lyman's load data is based on the shorter length, loaded into 1.285" brass. If you are shooting a Ruger, then you can crimp in the crimp groove and bump the charge up a bit to get the same ballistics as they publish.
I ran into this issue myself back in the day, when one source recommended 14.0 grains of powder while Lyman said 13.5 was the max. The higher charge was for the longer seated boolit, but that wasn't specified. It was several years down the road when an older, more experienced reloader pointed that out to me.

If they both fit ... I prefer to crimp the case in that boolit's crimp groove.
I never cared for crimping over the front driving band ... In theory the front driving band located above the crimp helped center the round in the chamber and the sharp shoulder of the band would cut a clean hole ...
I also feel you get a better holding crimp when in the groove .
But that's all theory ... I still like em crimped in the crimp groove if possible... the reloads just look more better .

- this x1000
And more better is more better.
Probably a misprint, i have found others in the lyman. Regardless, oal is gun & bullet specific. Crimp in the provided crimp groove & make sure its short enough for your cyl.
EVERY GOOD SHOOTER NEEDS TO BE A HANDLOADER.
