Which way does an Uberti 1860 barrel catch usually fly?

Mine flew off today.

There is sand and gravel around me, grass is behind. I'll try to find a magnet tomorrow.

But what direction does it most probably fly? My logic says to either side ... but my logic has failed before.



I was standing next to this table,shooting at a 75 m plate / trap. Trying to figure out the new-to-me Lee 220 grain trajectory. It appears to be quite accurate.

I would look for it on the left.
Going by Uberti’s pics of same, it mounts in the frame from left to right.

Never had one do that - but I’ve learned not to ever be surprised…

Hard to say where it went; since they are driven in from the left side (with muzzle pointing forward), it should fall to the left, but could have gone flying anywhere if it turned loose when you fired.

Might be easier to just buy two replacements and have a spare stored somewhere. I’d bet folks lost them with some regularity back in the day.

I have to order them first. Then Uberti importer gets them from Italy with the next shipment which may be around Christmas.

Nobody sends gun parts from USA any more so I can't get them from there.

I made a replacement once for an original 1860 but it wasn’t fun. The original snapped in half (no idea why) and I was able to salvage the spring. The wedge design is fairly simple but takes some careful file work to get the spring fitted properly. Best of luck to you in finding the lost piece - a magnet is probably the best solution.

*Edit: I assumed we were talking about the barrel wedge, but this was the loading lever latch that came loose. I agree it can be staked into place fairly easily.

Use a piece of rawhide like we have to do with a Walker.

A friend has a metal detector. I drove to borrow it. But all the brass gave too many false beeps,as suspected.



But he also has a strong magnet,I actually asked about magnet first. Dragging the Magnet,I found the part in gravel, it was six feet directly behind me.

Loctite sells a product that will prevent that happening again. Or, you could just peen it.

I can easily see that happening, as the wedge didn't fall out by itself - it came out under recoil, when the fired gun's position was likely mostly vertical.

Got me, too - was assuming barrel wedge.

The latches are generally dovetailed to the best of my recollection.

Silver braze that lever latch back on! It will never come off again. The barrel and latch will turn a dull red to get the silver braze to melt. You will have to spot rust blue the area or have the entire barrel polished and hot tank blued. That is the only downsize to reattaching the lever catch.

Loctite sells a product that will prevent that happening again. Or, you could just peen it.

Got Locktite,both Red and Blue. I may try blue first... peening may work,too but I'm not a machinist... soldeting would be a gunsmith job.

These cheap guns seem to get expensive.

I’ve never messed with the catch so I don’t know whether there is a slight taper that allows easier starting from one side or the other. You might want to experiment from both directions.
