Reformed 7.62 NATO brass.

Hi everyone.
I have had some resized brass in my possession for a while now that I got in a sale from a friend of a friend. At first, I thought it was made into 44 WCF casings, but have since changed my mind as the dimensions are not quite right.
The size is very close to the 7.62 x 39 brass associated with the ak 47.
Have any of you ever had 7.62 brass reformed to 7.62 x 39?

I have pictures of it that I can send if someone wants to look at it. Most of the brass is stamped LC and the date, although there are a few different ones.

Any ideas?

There's a big difference in head size between 7.62x51 and 7.62x39

Any chance it's 5.56 brass formed into 300 blackout?

The U.S.has manufactured 7.62X39 ammo in the past but my understanding is that most was sterile for spec ops use. Normally the U.S. would just buy some on the open market from former Eastern Bloc countries.

What is the question? I form 6.5 Grendel and 30x39 from new Winchester 7.62x39 brass. If you have 7.62x51 brass, it is 308 brass. Now if you get mini gun brass, forget it, the chambers are oversized on purpose for feeding, so the web and upper case both are blown out. We used to get 308 brass by the wood case full from the range for free distribution at the gun club, the M-60 brass was OK. You had to check to make sure they would even resize back to original.

The US Military has a supply of ammo from other countries so if it is desirable, they can leave spent brass on the ground from anywhere else.

I have seen (online) where it is possible to reform 308/7.62x51 brass to 35 Remington. In my humble opinion, I'd rather wait until 35 Remington brass comes into stock and then buy up what I need than to go through the reforming process for that. As far as reforming 308/7.62x51 brass, converting it to 300 Savage has to be the easiest of all possible reforming operations. Just run the 308 brass thru a 300 savage resizing die and then cut the necks to length.

I have seen (online) where it is possible to reform 308/7.62x51 brass to 35 Remington.

It could be 35Rem made from 308. I tried it with 30.06 brass on a rainy day whim. My attempt looked like 35Rem, but would not chamber completely as the base would not size down far enough. I read a post on this forum that indicated a way to resize the base was to use a 44mag resizing die. I did not have one to try. And, later found a supply of 35Rem brass. I shelved the project. I believe RCBS used to sell a kit to reform 30.06 into 35Rem.

Without a picture and some measurements, it is hard to guess what the brass was intended to become.

Post a photo of the case. A picture is worth a thousand words after all.

However, it maybe .308x1.5 Barnes which is an ancient wildcat. It's comparable in size to 7.62x39.

seen everything made from 308 (7.62 Nato ) such as .243 win. 358 win. 7mm/o8 rem, 260 Rem. 45 Raptor etc.

AMT used 308 for the 44 auto mag several other specialty cartridges, Wildey had some based on 308 brass also

I cant see 7.62 being formed from 308 as the case heads are different .441 case head/rim for 7.62 x 39 and .473 for 308.

Check out Lee's Modern Reloading manual, it has full size line drawing's of cases which would help you identify what calibre your brass is.

I have seen several LC headstamped 7.62x39 cases in the past. Maybe a run of them was made for the civilian market like the .223 and 5.56 currently sold? I have also seen LC cases headstamped 300 Blackout; not formed from 5.56.

What's the length of the cases? If they're ~1.2", .45 Winchester Magnum would be likely.

30 Remington or 6.8 SPC can be converted to 10mm- but definitely not the .308.
