Ed's Red and Used ATF

I mix up Ed's using ATF/Kerosine/Mineral Spirits. I just changed the ATF in my F250 and have 6 qts of used ATF. No metal flakes or anything just a little dark from use. Any downside from using it instead of new ATF? Will it work as well?

There are contaminants that One cannot see with the nekkid eye. Stick a clean magnet in the ATF and see if it grows "hair" under a magnifying glass. The "darkness" is caused by the fibrous clutch material chaffing and charring during operation.
It isn't something I would use.

There are 2 large magnets in the pan catching all that stuff and not much of it at that. If I use it as a cleaner than a final swipe with clean fluid that might do it?

I would not use is it. Friction material from the clutches is not magnetic, but a microscopic contaminant, nonetheless.

Penetrating oil possibly

Would probably makes a great greasy parts cleaner. I have never tried it though. james

I’ve read about filtering used oil with a cotton rope. Use it as a wick and let gravity transfer it to a clean vessel over a month or so.

Back then, they did some things out of desperation.
Like using both sides of toilet paper.

Folks around here mix it with used motor oil and swab it on the floor of their flatbed trailers as a preservative you'll want to do it in hot, dry weather.

IIRC, there were over 15 quarts in my 2007 F250 and it was expensive.

Huh. I always used diesel fuel on a walking floor in cold weather so the chips didn't stick. I guess that would work. I'm currently straining it through coffee filters to see if I can clean it up some. It might find some use as a ATF/Acetone penetrating oil through rust and stuff but I don't use a lot of that. ATF/Acetone is the best for that use and the cheapest, too.

Rather than acetone, you might substitute wintergreen oil. Isn't as volatile/combustible as acetone and is a way mo betta penetrant.

Don't use old ATF in ed's red ... You are already leaving out the Acetone ...
I thought us Cajun's was Cheep ... you got me beat Seven Ways to Sunday !
You want all the additives contained in New ATF and you don't want the contaminants the old ATF has picked up ... And you want Conventional not Synthetic ATF ... but you pronably know that !
