Lamb and beef tallow made my lube hard. But it didn’t get rancid mixed with beeswax. Lot of cholesterol in lard. That’s what makes it so good. I like oils now for lubricious, mineral oil I’m working on, Vaseline and wax. Soft and sticky.

    Heres how I render fats.
wrap the cuttings loose in cheese cloth.
I use a slow cooker but a pot ad open fire can be used but you have to be on it more
Fill so its full with the water and wrapped cuttings added
Plug it in outdoors with lid on I normally start on high and when it gets to a slow boil turn it to medium. Then let it "cook" for several hours, check intervals.
As it "cooks" you see the fat melt and float up thru the cheesecloth to the top while the meat bits grizzle and contaminants stay trapped in the cheese cloth.
I normally let it cook for 4-5 hours like this. Then shut he pot off or remove from fire and let cool completely fall or early spring is best with cooler temps you get a harder block on top to work with
Remove the block on top with tongs or a couple spatulas and set on a rack towels or rags to dry.
I will normally remelt and pour into "ingots" for use. Or for storage it can be poured into pint mason jars and sealed for storing.

While the overall process takes time there is very little actual time spent on it as most is just the occasional check while its cooking

Great idea using cheese cloth. I use lamb fat for lube. All of my bacon fat gets used for cooking and there’s a lot of it. I fry bacon almost every day.

I rarely eat bacon, but when I do, it is a pound at a time less the three slices my wife eats.

ME no but I have heard many success stories with it you tube Loads of Bacon has a video up of it. It is very interesting he does state has to be purified, filtered but from what I have seen not only from his video, others that use it around me once rendered purified and filtered, it is as good as any other, Lard Componet. I like my Morrell snocap lard, beeswax, anhydrous lanolin and ballistol mix, it has kept just fine since 2023, I need to make more, my process yeilds 40 ounces at a time.

Permatex (white) hand cleaner. Sold at many big name auto-parts stores.
A little goes a long ways.

If I'm buyng from someone else, I go to October Country for their bear/mink-oiled pre-lubed 015 pillow tickers.

I use paper soaked in various cooking grease to start fires in my firepit. The smoke makes the neighbors hungry.
    Regards,

Cooking grease goes to the dogs and I use diesel to start wood fires for heating.

The cap and ball people often a used recipe based on lambs tallow and beeswax

Simple 1:1 Mixture: Equal parts lamb (mutton) tallow and beeswax. This is a traditional and highly regarded choice for "primitive" or historical shooters.

Aside from the salt, if you want to use the grease from cooking bacon it been way too hot to work well as a lube. Natural greases work best if they have not been raised to the smoke point. Just buy lard. It keeps for ever in the freezer.

Rendered bacon fat is lard as is any fat from pigs. What makes bacon different is the cut and seasoning.

Back years ago when a pig was butchered they were bigger and after scraping they were cut up, the fat trimmed and set aside sausage was ground from unwanted cuts and or trimmings. The fat was was rendered and skin would be fried in this (chitlin's) then the rendered fat filtered and stored. Intestines were washed and used for sausage. very little of a hog went to waste. Sows and boars got big and render more lard.
