35 Whelen load using 358156 ( 158 Gr SWC )

A friend is looking for a deer load using the 358156. (That is the heaviest boolet mould i have.)
They are ending up at 160Gs after checked/powder coated.

I loaded a few with 12Grs Unique. Pretty decent groups but i feel it is too mild for deer
Not sure how high a charge i can go with this powder.

I have a good selection of powders on hand so would like to hear of any loads.

just some guessing here. extrapolating from published load data. might try 57 or 58 grains of h4895 but the velocity may be too high for twist rate but h4895 can be downloaded safely to a certain percent so maybe even try 48 or 50 grains and see what happens.
do you have a chronograph to see how fast bullet is going. I'd think 1900-2200fps ought to get the job done.

Try a few from both sides of the magazine before you get too far into the project. My particular 98 Mauser in .35 Whelen does not feed SWC.

I successfully took a whitetail buck with a 147 grain XTP from a 9mm carbine. I had a great dog for finding deer at the time. I heard the buck run about 60 yards and crash in dry leaves. That was probably an 1100 FPS load.

I won’t attempt it again until I get a more capable dog.

Any idea of the actual velocity your 12 grains of Unique load in 35 Whelen?

I don't have H4895 but do have IMR4895. Found a load of 50Grs of IMR for a max load with 155s. May start with 45Grs and see what i can get.

This is for a single shot so feeding is a non issue but damn good advise.

I think i need to break out the new in box Chronograph and see what i am getting. I may step up the Unique a little, mabe a grain or 2. I have never ventured into loads without published data.

the lee 358-200/ RCBS 35-200 is a great investment when loading for 35 whelen, 35 Remington and just about all the 35 cal rifle cartridges. it just plain works well just as the 358156 really shines in every 357 mag gun ive ever run it though.
just something to think about for the 35 whelen owner.

I have been eyeing that Lee 200Grainer mould for a while. My friend and my nephew both have a 35 Whelen.
They are both are more interested in a round for deer and primitive season is close.
