    my favorite 22 plinker...

just happens to be a Winchester 69A I picked up about 20 years ago as part of a collection for the grand price of $17.50.. It was dirty and needed a good cleaning but this little gem digests just about every brand of ammo I put through it..
It completely original with the original Winchester peep sights and its an erly model not grooved for scope.

    So whats your favorite PLINKER..

I've got one of those too. I don't think mine is grooved I just use the peep sight. Have to get it out shooting again.

Mine would have to be my very first rifle (Christmas present 1973), an Ithaca M-49. It's a falling block single shot and is a hoot to plink with. Although a single shot, it looks like a scaled down Win94, so to my 12-year-old eyes, it was my cowboy gun.

My two .22's are a Contender Carbine .22lr Match w/older Weaver K3 scope and a 5 1/2" OM Single Six revolver. I'm good.

I've got a bunch of .22 rifles, but the one that puts a smile on my face every time for plinking is my Remington 121 pump rifle from 1940. It's just a joy to pick up, load and shoot off hand with. It's not a paper puncher, but it fits me just right and seems to self zero on any small target within 65 or so yards.

When I grab a rifle for pure plinking pleasure, I snag one of these old reliables. Every one of them is 100+ years old and the bunch of them have taught quite a flock of boys and girls how to shoot. The stocks are carved with several of their initials.
My personal favorite is the one with the sling - Remington Model 6. I've spent many hours rehabbing and repairing them with out ever refinishing the old stocks or steel. Most of them needed new hammer springs, and frequently firing pins. They account for many dead starlings in my yard. jd

It seems that people who do almost nothing, often complain loudly when it's time to do it.

My first is my favorite to this day. It is an early 50's Marlin 39A. I remember going with Dad to the Marlin plant about 1960 and him buying a buttstock for it as it didn't have one. Dad gave it to me in 1961 for my 8th birthday. I still have it and it shoots where I point it !

I kind of agree with avogunner in that the rifle that brings the most joy to me when I shoot it is my first one, a Savage-Springfield Model 120A that I got for Christmas in 1974.

Lately the best one I have shot is a MAS 45 that I put a red dot sight on since I can't see the front sight and the target clear enough anymore.

I will say there is something magical about using a pump .22 that nothing else matches.

Mine is a 1919 Savage NRA target rifle. Dad bought that for me about 1965 when I was on the high school ROTC rifle team as a practice rifle. I have a lot of 22s but that is my go to if I need to hit what I'm shooting at. If we are talking hand guns then an early Ruger MK I T that I mounted an old Bushnell Phantom 2.5x scope on. It shoots almost as well as the Savage.

My Marlin Mdl 39 Carbine. I bought my first one, mail ordered from Klein's. Gave it to a cousin when I enlisted in the Marines. I ended up looking for another one after I got out and my cousin wouldn't part with it. I found another one in pristine condition on an auction site, but paid a premium price. But it was worth it...the best lever gun of them all.

one piece at a time Remington - model 512 tube feed receiver and barrel - 521 action internals - 513 bolt - 521 modified stock + hardware - Squires Bingham magazine - no collectibles modified to do this, most parts from donors with problems - one inch groups from front rest at 50yards with most ammo, thunder bolt excluded - r

My hunting rifle is a Remington Scoremaster model 511 with which I dispatch squirrels using .22 shorts. However my favorite plinker is my Browning Buckmark that shoots better than I can.

In GS a neighbor kid gave me his worn out 22 rifle. Had a spring loaded FP, pull on the knob to cock. Sear was a groove in the FP. Don't know what brand, it was accurate but I learned to NOT like bolt rifles. Could still be in the attic of folks old house for all I know - they didn't know I had it. I just shot it in the attic at a crate of 2x4 pieces.
    Whatever!

Winchester Model 63 I inherited from one of my favorite uncles. Killed more woodchucks with it than all the other 22's put together.

Or the Glenfield bolt action that probably had 10,000+ rounds through it during junior high and high school.

Or the Winchester Model 67 that I had to buy for myself after my dad's youngest grandson talked dad into bequeathing his Model 67.

Or Kimber 82G, or the Winchester Model 52, or the Remington 511.

Maybe the hot rodded up 10/22.

    Pick a favorite?

    Can't be done.

Dad got a Mod 72 from a widow. Dirt dauber nest in the barrel, rusty as heck. As he was cleaning it the bolt handle broke off. He welded it back on and cleaned it up. That thing shoots like a dream. Rusty ol clunker.
