You will have fun. Spent about 10 years shooting SASS until I got addicted to Trap shooting.

Now that I am in my 70’s, I should go back and enjoy the more laid back atmosphere but sold the pistols and shotguns. Just do it.

Its a blast for sure. I've been at it for several years... my pistols are a bond derringer in 22, two Ruger Vaqueros in 45 colt. a Marlin 1894CB in 45 colt and I have gone through several shotguns depending on my mood.. I have an 1897 riot gun, an old 12 ga double Belgian guild gun, another 12 double I forget the make and a 20 ga double which has been my most recent favorite.

I'll be going tomorrow, for the last time until I can get my work schedule corrected.

I would really like to try it a couple of time before I commit to the investment of attire that would never be used for anything else.

You don't have to go all out with a costume. The original thing was to dress similar to "B" Movie or TV show cowboys of the 1930s through 1950s. Just watch some old movies or Bananza and you'll see it's pretty easy. Not everyone was a "cowboy" in rhinestones, historically accurate, or anything. Jeesh, "Cowboys" didn't really dress like we picture cowboys. Many wore Bowler hats. We had a guy who dressed as a sailor.
We had a guy who badmouthed everyone for wearing belts instead of suspenders. He actually stopped coming to our club's monthly shoots because I showed him a picture of my Great, Great, Uncle wearing a Khaki Army uniform with a belted trousers and no braces/suspenders circa 1888 and a picture of my Great Uncle next to his biplane in WWI wearing a belt and no suspenders.
Cowboy boots, jeans , a gingham or chambray shirt to be a cowboy. Cotton or wool slacks, leather shoes and maybe a white cotton shirt for a storekeeper or bartender. Make it up as you go, don't need to get fancy and expensive. Except for boots and hat, they can be expensive.

Edit: Myth is that Levis invented the belt loop in 1922. That's total bilk. Levis just added belt loops to their products in 1922.

Wild West Mercantile has everything you need to cowboy up, but you really don't need to go whole hog. Lots of choices, and here are some we had today.

This woman is a 100% doppelganger for my sainted mother-in-law. Same voice, too. Alias is Saddle Vamp.

All my cowboy clothes came from goodwill. Cowboy boots included.

Doesn't have to be expensive, unless you choose to make it expensive.

The cowboy boots got replaced with engineers boots because they were more comfortable, then went to running shoes when the plantar fasciitis kicked up.

I went and watched one cowboy shoot. That was enough for me. There seemed to be a lot more socializing than shooting and I'm not dressing up like a cowboy.

Yes, there is a lot of socializing. It's not as much a run and gun match as it is people just out having fun while shooting. All told today I fired 120 rounds of 38 Special and 26 rounds of 12 ga in about 4 hours. I still had a great time. If you don't want to participate, that's perfectly fine, I don't want to LARP in a plate carrier and bump helmet that I never used while actually in the military...but it would be funny to shoot a match with the Vietnam era flak vest and M14 I actually DID use.

I'm a SASS life member with a low 4-digit badge number and agree it's not for everyone, wouldn't be fun if it was. I agree about the flak vest and M-14, but it would only be fair if the vest were sopping wet with about 10# of water, four full mags, 2 frags, and two more of smoke, and two full canteens, and maybe a claymore or two for balance. If you can get up off the ground unassisted, you're not carrying your fair share. Let the games begin, but as my wife used to say, "You have to remember you're not 45 anymore." GF

Well, no, because I was using it for Navy shipboard security in the 80s, and since we had security alerts called out at many weird hours, for us it would be flak vest, skivvies, shower shoes, tin pot, and two magazines, one hanging from a pouch on the sling. We didn't have Marines...and I can't remember 45...
