    shoulder tame 45-70

Making up some 300gr lfp over 14 5gr trailboss. fun..easy to shoot all day. Plus I can use them in any of my 45-70's safely.

I'm becoming recoil shy in my dotage and can appreciate your load. Have any idea how fast they are going?

perhaps 1230fps or so..just looking at the data.

I am ok with thumper loads..but i don't prefer them all day..only hunting practice and hinting..for range plinking I like fun easy loads nowadays.

There was a thread either here or on the old CastPics site that talked about whisper loads. I think the guy who wrote it experimented with .223, 30-30, 30-06 and 45-70.

He had a load using the Lyman 457122 and Clays, he freely admitted the hollow point was pointless but it was a mold he owned.

I loaded some at 4.4 grains, a magnum load in comparison to the original 4.0 in the article.

At two hundred yards you aimed 10-12 feet above the dinger, it probably was only doing 200 FPS when it hit, muzzle velocity was in the 400-500 FPS. It still rang the dinger nicely.

Whisper loads are too much fun not to shoot them.

Just check the barrel between shots, always a risk of one that doesn't make it all the way.

With Clays disappearing, need to come up with an alternative.

I’m loading 12grs. of Red Dot under a 300gr. FN cast bullet. I believe I could shoot it all day . It’s a pleasure to shoot.

My favorite load in 12 grains on unique with anything from 400-500 grains.
All the older Lyman manuals have Unique loads for 45-70. It’s bulky and burns just fine in that big old case.

I load 45-70 using 10 grains of Green Dot under a 405 grain hard cast bullet. It goes around 1000 FPS and is useful for punching paper at 100 yards. It's pretty accurate and about like having a 22 rimfire go off.

I shoot a Rapine 460210 over 6 gr of Bullseye and a Rapine 460250 (270 gr) over 8 gr Bullseye. Both under 1050 fps out of my TDs and are very accurate. More fun than a 22 LR.......

For my 1895 Marlin guide gun I load 405 grain with 14 grains of Trail Boss to hunt hogs in the swamp. Most shots are 15-30 yards so plenty good. At that close of a distance at 1,300 fps it hits them like a brick and it doesn't bust my knuckles in the lever like my full house loads I use in my heavier 1895 Cowboy.

There was a recent post of a fellow casting the Collar Button 458 boolits. Is there any mould maker turning out the 45-70 gallery boolit moulds? They only require 6~7 grs of Unique. The old Lyman Ideal 457130 was the original Collar Button mould that dropped a 150 gr boolit.

Take a look at the Accurate mold site. If a bullet is not in the catalog they will make custom design. I'm sure they have a collar button mold available, maybe even a couple of variations.
    Good Luck,
