    Alternative bullet lube

Just kinda asking if anyone has tried this before. I fried some meatballs on the stove last nite, and I wondered if the leftover oil in the pan would be good for some kind of bullet lube. So to make a long story short, I dumped it in a lube pan and threw 100 359 180 grain cast bullets in. Put it in the toaster oven at 375 for one hour. Pulled them out of the oil and gave them 2 more hours in the oven. They have almost a dry cast iron pan kinda feel to them . I’m gonna load them up and see what happens.

Back when I was drag racing 60's-70's-I had to change My bronze pilot bushing in the crankshaft every so often for power shifting. One day I boiled one in transmission grease before installing and cured that. You never know.

Various types of rendered fat/tallow & beeswax was about all they had for a few hundred years back in the BP musket days.
Half beeswax & half different kinds of tallow is or was pretty common for the BP folks even in modern times.
Folks also spoke of keeping it in the refrigerator so it wouldn't go rancid and stink.

If you don't go much over black powder speeds- it should do OK.
Gone are the days of wooden ships and Iron men.
I doubt we shall see their likes again.

I'd have to pass on that experiment.

The question is, is there any salt in that Meatball fat? If so, it might be corrosive.
Guys have talked about using bacon grease for a lube before, but the salt is corrosive.
You could try some lard, unsalted of course.

Lard ... rendered fat from a hog / pork .

Tallow ... rendered fat from a cow / beef .

Both are long time ingredients in old school black powder boolite lube .
Don't see them used in smoleless powder lubes too much .

Let us known how your oven-baked beef - grease boolits shoot ...

What if it works? Meatballs are about $4-5 a pound and there isn’t much fat recovered.

I would be concerned about how much salt, other corrosives(tomato juice?) would be going down the bore. Immediate cleaning after shooting might be needed.

Some folks thought painting boolits with paint instead of conventional lube sounded crazy ... but it seems to work !

Give those Grease Fried Boolits a chance ...
Just Might Work better than painted !
