Thread: any use for ethanol fireplace fuel?

    This stuff isn't really liquid, it's more of a gell. Whatever they gell it with probably won't work to pour in a gas tank or whatever.

    Try it in your neighbor's tank first.

    It's as liquid as liquid can be... not even a hint of gel..

    Oh, I see. I was confusing it with the gelled pellet/ woodstove starter.

    Would be good for a general solvent around the shop.

    it is a good stove fuel. I used it in a pump-up camp stove and it roared like a Saturn V taking off. Very hot. But there's one caveat, don't leave it in there for extended periods or it'll rust the tank if ti's steel. You needn't ask how I know. Alcohols tend to be hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air, which is what attacks steel containers.

    If that happens, though, all is not lost. Some evaporust to remove the scale and some of that liquid epoxy fuel tank repair coating will fix it right up if the leaks are small.
