cigarette paper

I used the search but could not find information on patching
with cigarette paper. I am using tracing paper but it is a bit to thick
for my Whitworth. Would cigarette paper hold up? and what size
should I use? Single leaves a 1/8 gap on 2 wraps.

I did ZigZag papers to bring 8x56R boolits up to .332" for my M95 rifle. Two wraps still needed trimming the length. They did like any paper and made confetti leaving he rifle.

I rolled my own for many years -ZigZag are pretty thin. Top a bit thicker. Head shops will have stuff like news paper for the stoners; you know-being stoned makes them so much better at what they do.....

Curious... So, how well does newsprint work for paper patching? Reason I ask is, most print shops always have remnant rolls that they usually discard. One remnant would keep a "Roll Yer Own" type in paper patching material for a rather long time I would think.

Ditto the Q. We get so many newsprint grocery store adds in the mail, would the ink be abrasive?

A lot of paper has clay in it.
That might be abrasive over time.

There used to be an item sold in the office supply stores called "onion skin paper", that is what I used when I was paper patching the .43 Spanish. Worked just fine for my purposes. I also had a brass template that I used to cut the patches with. james

Yep, that's what you want. I keep an eye open in thrift stores and antique shops, and sometimes find boxes of it. Of course you can buy it from Buffalo Arms but you'll pay a premium for that.

Ed Cole drafting paper goes around .0018 onion skin about the same tracing paper can be .0023-.003 cigarette papers are .001 or very close. PAper patching isnt just about the paper thickness but the interaction between bullet dia and the 2 wraps of paper combined.

This will be for a bore dia bullet. you have a .443 dia bullet 2 wraps of ed cole at .0018 = .0072 ( 2 wraps is 4 layers) +.443= .4502. With the thicker tracing paper and same bullet .443 dia it equals .0092+.443 - .4522 or a little to big to fit in the bore.
Wet wrapping will allow paper to stretch and thin a little also.
Templates should be cut so the 2 wraps dont overlap and allow a small gap between the 2 ends this allows for the overlap radius at the joint.

When shooting these paper patched bullets watch and recover the patches. The first layer should come of in a fine confetti the under layer and fold over intact and not burnt or destroyed with rifling showing on it.

The original paper used was a 25% cotton fiber paper that was tough and stretched some.

Seth Cole you mean. And you want complete cutting of the paper. Any inner wrap means paper too thick for rifling depth. To win national championships you want strips of confetti at the muzzle, same for world record groups. 55W paper Seth Cole tracing vellum.

I floated the onion skin paper on a pan of warm water of about 5 minutes or so and then rolled it a little with the wife's rolling pen before cutting using the template. Twisted the bottom part of the wet paper after applying the patch onto the bullet and then let stand overnight. The wet paper seemed to shrink when it dried just enough to fit my .43 roller. This made some really nice paper patched bullets. I tried wrapping dry and they would not fit the chamber/throat is the reason I went to wet. Someone on another site told me to use wet patches but I don't remember who and on what site. But it worked for me. james

In my opinion wet patching and drying on a coffee warmer is the only way to go.

Thank you Kenny for the correction I was wrong in the name again thank-you for the right name.

I wet wrap also but set a few strips on a sponge in a bowl of water as they set there they will curl and uncurl just barely damp wen I use them. they wrap tighter and smoother, I wrap tail less with just a small portion of the base showing in the center. When rolling the fold over under it is much flatter and even

Or you can buy it from the (Paper Mill Store) and pay 1/2 what they charge for it from Buffalo Arms . and its the same package just without the logo sticker.

I believe the clay would polish the bore. It would take a long long time and many shots to alter the bore in any way. There may be someone who comes along who knows better but I think I'm right.

I used it to roll paper cartridges for my Muzzle Loaders . Which version do you use for paper patching ? Southworth had a smooth and cockled finish in 7.5 , 9 , and 10 pound bond .
