I had a question about my Dobson flies. Does anyone know how far from water they can go? As far as I know I'm not within a half mile of any water. The Illinois River may be a half mile away.

I think a lot of bugs get enough water just from the dew falling at night.

There's no shortage of bugs in really dry places that don't have any people, or bodies of water for many miles.

Yeah but the Helgramite lives in water and only comes out to transform into the Dobson fly only living a few days in that form to breed. I wonder how far from their water source they fly to breed.

Thanks. Looks like they should be fairly close to a river. IDK how they are ending up at my house.

Yes, my wife spends a good bit of money keeping her nails in shape. You should see my nails - they look like most knifemakers - ragged.

Thank you MaryB - I should have thought to post the photo months ago. I'm constantly amazed how much info is available on these forums. Great place.

A few days ago I saw this giant horsefly behind my bug zapper in my garage. Too big to fit thru the grilles on it but attracted to the light. I dusted him with diatoaceous earth and went in. Found him today. Probably the biggest I've ever seen. 1/2" wide at the abdomen. Glad he didn't give me a bite.

We were discussing the big spiders who weave webs near your house the other day in some thread. I always called them Garden spiders but someone pointed out that they aren't. I guess they are called orb weavers. Here's a nice one I saw in my field a few nights ago while out hunting armadillos.

I believe that is the adult version of a Hornworm catepillar. AKA 'round these parts as a 'tamata moth'.
Another of the luna moth family.

Hornworm catepillars will defoliate a tomato plant in short order. Nasty buggers. Kill on sight in my garden.
