What is the length and dia of it. Some armorers made a level to fit inside the ears of garand and m14 sight mounts to time the barrel when fitting tightening it up level in rear level on fronts base when both read the same your there.

4 11/16" overall when extended - apx. 5/16 " diameter at ends - will get exact diameter when i have access to my calipers + mic. - the knurled ends have a screw slot -

The Diameter is right to fit threw the holes in the ears. The ears folded down would keep the level up and from sliding out when bumping the last little bit.

Even though it was in with cleaning equipment dosnt make it firearm related. Estate sales / auctions a lot gets thrown together that isnt related.

I once had to buy four different "lots" to get 1 complete set of inside mics as they had been split up between the different "lots" That looks to have been made by someone for a task. Any names or numbers on it?

still guessing - definitely not a line level, no place to attach line - every engineers spirit level i could find on internet did not have the foldable legs like this one - very possible it is not firearm related because there were other items in the .22 caliber kit that were auto related -

no they do not - turning the knurled insert turn only slighltly when turned in or out + do not lock in any position, both turn freely over 180 degrees in either position

It might fit inside another tool for something like a surveyor's transit or something for engineers or machinists.

If so, it's part of something else and not meant to be used free standing or separately.

    Level

I would think it is a adjustable level

you woulds adjust it so it would give the slope you want( using a 4 foot level) and a tape measure

ie 1/8 per foot - 1/4" per foot
then all you would have to do is put it on top of your -board/ pipe etc to check or adjust what ever you are leveling with a slope

I have a level that has a built in slope bubble

It would be useful to align / check level on two male pipe ends or drilled holes. If the swiveling pins aren’t threaded to extend or shorted it would be tough to set at and maintain an angle.

I have an adjustable spirit level bubble and circular housing for building tapered chimneys and masonry walls. It is made to be set in a 1 3/4” hole drilled through a 1 1/4” x 3” straight batter board. Degrees of pitch are marked on housing. Set the pitch and the bubble will show level when your walls are at the correct taper. With it and an adjustable radius tram you can build a tall tapered stack with a continuously plumb center axis.
To maintain a consistent taper one mason plumbed the entire circumference from the ground up.

My guess it is some type of incline level. Like if you were installing drain gutters, sewer pipes or pipes that require draining due to process changes or temperature. Center one side and screwing the other out may give you 1/16" drop per foot of gutter. Screw one end out the other end in may give you 1/8"drop per foot. Also various drops could be obtained by adjusting the angle of the legs to the level. Just a thought.
