What powder to use for the M1 Garand.

Sent an email to Hodgdon, asking about H380, they don't recommend it, it's too slow. Now to come up with a way to burn off 15-20 pounds of H380.

I'm a little pickier about the accuracy of those rifles as opposed to offhand dinger ringing with one of the Garands.

I have used reloader 15 norma 202 and shooters world match , all of which are hard to find , shooters world was a cheaper powder not any more and as hard to find as any now a days , I put schuster plugs in mine so I can use what powders are available .

Mine.was used in our varmint matches, 10 ring is about 7/8". It's time for a new barrel, went from a fairly regular 50 at 100 yards, to lucky to hit in the scoring rings at all.

Good thing, part 2 of my question was about Accurate 2495, got ~8 lbs, there are Garand safe loads with 2495.

I know it doesn't answer the OP's original question but the 2495 load makes me happy.


Now if I only could remember where I got the H380 loads.

I guess hogdons forgot they used to load USGI 30 cal with H380.

4895 isn't the original powder..it wasn't loaded until around 1944.


The garand isn't as sensitive as the internet leads you to believe.

Key rules are oprod spring is at least 19.5" long and it's properly greased and you will be fine with no modifications.

H335 - 49.0 grains I've used this load since about 1999 when I got mine from the DCM for $169.00 delivered to my door by the USPS.

I assume that you are also using 150gr bullets? That powder is available locally and is one of the ones I was looking at. Is this the only one you have used and how do you like it?

Problem is that IMR 4895 is unobtainium. Looking for something that is obtainable.

Ramshot TAC and Accurate 2495 act very much like H4895, both are available at Powder Valley. At current prices, TAC is a bargain.

I do desire to buy the powder locally with cash. H335 is available locally as well as N140 and I do have a pound of N140 on hand. In doing an internet search I found this on another site. https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=65113&page=2&

I think at this point I have some loads I can load up with the N140 and I have heard some good things about the VV powders. I am also going to get a pound of H335 and try that one out also. It will be several weeks before I can go to the range but will report back with what I find out.

N135. Just a hair faster than H4895. It's available and it's no longer the expensive, hard to find powder it was. I've been using it since 4895 and 4064 became hard to find. N140 is good if you were a Varget/Re15 lover.

Don't ask how I know a slow powder can bend your op rod! I stay in the burn rate between 4895 and 4064. I put an adjustable gas plug on but have only used max 172gr bullets. I adjusted the plug to just get reliable function to take it easy on the action!
I bent it years ago and have played safe since! Parts are way more expensive now !
