Just because it’s a bad idea…
…. Doesn’t mean it won’t be a good time !
Leave it at is and pass it on to a family member or friend who will enjoy it for what it is. Buy a receiver and build what you want.

JUST GOTTA LOVE THIS JOINT.
Got to agree. Financially and sentimentally , not a good idea to alter that piece of history. And sorry for you loss.
How does the bore look? If it is decent shooting it might be an eye opener. I have shot some of those "Old Army Guns" that would put the new stuff to shame. Personally I would leave it be, it is a piece of history. I have had a couple mil-surps drilled and tapped for scopes but I mostly just leave them alone.
The 8 X 57 is a highly underrated caliber, one of my favorites.
Well…. It’s going to remain intact, and will eventually go to one of the grandchildren. In the mean time, I intend to make a point of shooting it.
A buddy gave me some brass and some PRVI 198 gr FMJBTs. I’ve scoured my books for some 200 gr data.
My newer Sierra book has completely omitted 8mm Mauser, for whatever reason. I have been able to find data for Sierra 200 SP, but I cannot find anything for 200 gr Matchking , which the PRVI very very closely resembles. Does anyone have an older Sierra book, with 200 Matchking?

Why not just use the 200gn data that is in there?
The data I found, is for a 200 gr soft spire point , with a plain flat base…. What I was given was 200 gr FMJBT… would the charges be close enough for the different characteristics? This is uncharted waters, for me. I run big, blunt brush busting lever guns… I’ve never owned pointy , fly far and flat bolt guns, and I’m just trying to do it right.

I think that sporterizing it would turn it from an all-numbered $2K (+/-) survivor into yet another $350 Mauser
If I didn't want it as an need/original, I would sell it in a venue that would bring the best price- usually one of the online auction websites.
I an glad, however, that you intend to pass it down to your grandchildren - Just enclose some paperwork with exactly what it is and what it's worth, so it'll get the proper attention from folks that have no clue to what it is, and what it's worth.

Now I lay me down to sleep
A gun beside me is what I keep
If I awake, and you're inside
The coroner's van is your next ride
I invite you to verify by a competent Gunsmith that your rifle is bored to .323 and not to .318, anyway_
I've always used/preferred Sierra 200 MK_
imho, if we talk about starting loads and staying safe in a good 98, bored to .323, my answer is yes_
then the best results obtainable about accuracy, etc. depend on other factors,
concerning your reloading methods and purposes, whether for hunting or target, etc._
_I've never used 198 gr FMJBTs by prvi-partizan_

Food is overrated. A nice rifle is way more important.

Definately .323 not the early .318. He had shot it frequently, and maintained it very well. He bought several different factory manufactured cartridges… all .323. I have some of that ammo and brass on hand… mostly lighter 150 soft tip stuff.
I did order the Lee C324-175 anyway. I plan on casting a couple soft ones, and pushing them thru to check.

now I'm moving, but as soon as I can I will be glad to post what I have about 8Maus. reloading tables, if if welcome and useful_

200 gr data is non existent in my old manuals.
But using 220 gr data for a 200 gr bullet is safe as can be.

I'd recommend buying this book. "The Mauser (M91 through M98) Bolt Actions - A Shop Manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen. It has everything you need to know to understand the workings of Mausers. Maybe not so much about collecting but the mechanics. I think it's the perfect mix of pictures, drawings and text. There was a write up about the author passing recently in I think The American Rifleman.
...now you have bullets, cases and tables_ if you communicate which powders you have, or those that are most immediately available to you, it would already be a good start to avoid wasting money, time and barrel with endless tests...
