Triple 7 - FFg, T/C maxi-ball, lubed felt wad over the powder.
My carbine is a 54 cal. Haven't spent much time shooting it. Have gotten spoiled shooting double set triggers over the years. For those not knowing. White Mtn has a antiquated single bow trigger. I suppose such a short barreled weapon would be a excellent close quarter thump-er.
Yes. I have shot R.E.A.L. bullets and found some good success. For sure, they need a felt wad underneath (at least for me). Track of the Wolf is a good source. October Country, another. All the giant suppliers (Natchez, mid-South, mid-Way, etc.) have some ML supplies for sale. T/C used to sell "bore buttons" which were good. Somebody else will chime in with another good source, I'm sure. Mason~Dixon ML'er's up in Kempton, Pa. is a great source for all things traditional ML'ing.
You can cut your own with a pair of scissors or make / buy a punch. Also, I use old fashion fiber shotgun wads of the right size (20 ga. for a .50 cal). Those you can peel into a good flat wad for under your bullet. Several can be had from just one shotgun wad.
Have hunted with R.E.A.L.'s and have no complaints. Have shot T/C "maxi-hunter" cast bullets, but didn't get as good of an accuracy from them. Other's find it the other way around and get better accuracy from maxi-hunters, as where I get better accuracy from maxi-balls. Kinda like what's better Ford or Chevy?
Use pure lead or something close and don't drive them very hard. Frequently 70 or 80 grain loads all all you need. Good luck.
Maxie ball and ffg.

Oops my preferred loading? First fire in a clean barrel. .535 ball over 90 gr. of 2-FF. There after firings in the foul barrel .530 ball is the only item I change. My rifle has a 1-48 twist. I'm comfortable shooting ball over a Maxi at close range__60 yrds or less.

I have one and named it "Sweet Thing" for a reason. It shoots better than I do in spite of a horrible trigger. My load is 75 gr of 3F and I am using a sabot (green) and a 429 cal 265 gr SWC. It is my long range rifle for desert mule deer and coastal elk. By long range I mean about 200 yards but only if there is a good rest and I have plenty of time to think about the shot since optics are not legal in this state. For closer in deer I prefer PRB in 45 cal.
