That is a post WW2 Yugoslavian Mauser 98 that has been sporterized.

It's a 98 Mauser..sporterized stock. Aftermarket sights. SN on bolt don't match receiver. 1944? Barrel appears to be original. Belongs to a friend, he does not know what it is chambered in. I'm thinking 7 or 8mm, but don't know how to tell without dropping in a cartridge. He said I could have it if I wanted it. Of course I want it....free gun. Absolutely.
Pro Patria-Ne Desit Virtus
Texas, what was the chambering on those?
Pro Patria-Ne Desit Virtus
7.92X57mm Mauser, AKA 8mm Mauser (8X57). Of course, that doesn't mean that it's still chambered for that cartridge.

Buy some cerrosafe if you don't have any. Brownells carries it. Do a chamber cast. You will answer all your questions.

"Hope" is not a viable plan and voting for undefined "change" is nothing short of certifiable insanity.
As noted, It's an 8x57 mm 98k German Mauser that was rebuilt after the war. Preduzece 44 was the rifle factory where the rebuild was done. Some of them got new replacement barrels and are excellent shooters. A friend had one that probably had the original barrel but it was in good condition and had been recrowned by the Yugoslavs. If the bore is in good condition it should be an accurate rifle. If your friend shot surplus ammo in it, assume it was corrosive so clean bore with your solution of choice that includes water, then clean normally. Ask your friend if he has the handguard and barrel bands and hardware; it's worth something. Enjoy your gift.

I was going to say you're making me feel bad. But that's looking at it wrong. I am glad for you-A new project.

He got it that way. Did not know what it was. Never been shot by him. He told me that it has been in the closet for 20+ years. I have not taken possession of it as of yet. But...I do have 6 pcs of brass.
I think I may have a VZ stock. Will it fit?

A VZ24 stock may not fit that intermediate action but if it IS a reworked K98 it may.....And it should be 7.9mm(8mm)- but Mauserworld is full of its and buts...
Congratulations on your new rifle, want to re-gift it?

Actually I did have plans to re-gift it. To my brother. Or..if the barrel is shot out..re-barrel to 308 Winchester.
Pro Patria-Ne Desit Virtus
If the barrel is good. It will stay. But if it's bad, 308.

The most expensive thing a person can ever own is a "free" horse.
Whether it will shoot well or not, leave it 8mm. Next best thing to the .358 Win. There are a lot of headaches trying to make a .308 based cartridge feed in an 8mm. Been there, done that, don't want to repeat it.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
I think a free boat would run the horse a close second. But you don't have to go out and feed and break ice for the boat to take a drink in the winter.
As to the rifle, even if it is shot out (or more likely ruined by did interest) a replacement 8mm barrel shouldn't be that hard to find.

I have some 98 Mauser take off barrels that are good, not perfect but good if interested.
largom, where are you located in Tennessee? I'm in Clarksville.
I took possession of it yesterday. Will get some more pics later today.
