    .45 cal H&R huntsman

I just came across a like new huntsman, (yes it is the threaded breach plug) which appears to have a 1 in 48 twist .. I was wondering how long of a conical I can stabilize in it? ....was hoping to paper patch some of my pistol bullets at some point but have not gotten as far as slugging the bore and doing any real comparisons .....was wondering if something like a R.E.A.L or and old Thompson maxi ball had a reasonable chance of working in this "compromise" twist.

The short T/C bullets and the Lee REAL were designed for 1:48 barrels. Should work just fine. Try them and let us know.

    A bit of advice:
This gun has a threaded two piece ramrod that extends and screws together.
You can strip the threads very easliy if it is not screwed together tight or you slam the ramrod down on the bullet to seat it.

I have seen the 1 in 57" in print now a number of time .....sigh .....I don't really want an online round ball gun in 45 .....hope I can find a Maxi mold that will work.

I used the Lee REAL(200gr) in a 1-66 twist and it worked ok. Seemed like I would have one flier out of 3 shots like it was on the edge of stability. Even if you do have the 1/57, you should be ok. You already checked though and seems you have the 1/48 twist.

    .

I'm sorry that I can't help with your intended loads, since the .45 Huntsman I set up about 12 years ago for my oldest Grandson was intended to make it E-Z-Peazy for him.

I converted the ignition from #11 caps to 209 primers, and set him up to shoot saboted .357 JSP's - which shot fairly accurately.

I had one year ago, it loved 75 grs of 3fff g and a 250 grain Lee Real slug, lubed with Crisco! Shot cloverleafs at 50 yds all day long! HOpe this helps,, oh and you could use a under wad beneath the slug, my recors show it improved accuracy slightly!

do not overlook handgun bullets in that slow twist! i have shot 250 grain 45 colt bullets from my 1 in 66 kentucky rifle with hunting level accuracy inside of 100 yards!
