well, figuring a short action ejection port is 2.4 inches and going from there:
The case is about 2.0 inches long, roughly. The bullet is about .343" diameter. Cartridge OAL is a scoche under 2.75" long. That means its either 338 federal or 358 win. The neck is about .343" long too. Which makes it more likely to be 358 win than 338 fed.
Finally, I see spitzers AND round noses in the pic. My guess is a RN is gonna be easier to source in a 358 than a 338.
So I'm betting 358 win.
The rifle and the loose bullet pictured are only there to give reference to the size of the cartridge in question and not related or applicable to one another.
Who cares about a few rounds of ammo, I want that rifle!

firt thing that came to mind is a 30-30 rimless. or a .30 remington as its called

30 rem is shaped like the 30-30 and the Nickle case is no 30-30. Its not a 32.
hi 303guy, read up, post 26. It's simple. Find a measurement that looks pretty close. In my case, I used the ejection port of the rifle, PRESUMING it to be a 2.4" short action. Not real data, but the idea was to put me into the ballpark. Resize the picture (even zoom in internet explorer will work for this) so a ruler on the screen shows that port to be about 2.4". Now measure the cartridge.
If you do that, the case is bang on 2" long, the bullet diameter and neck length are the same at .343 (I think that's 11/32 on my ruler). Given the incredible accuracy of my tooling (computer screen and a ruler) that puts us anywhere from .338 cal up to .358 cal. the case is very very likely in the 308 clan given the length. I didnt do this, but measuring the case head diameter via ruler could help confirm that.
But you can take any measurement you want.

In an obvious effort to prove I have too much time on my hands today, I broke out a caliper and scaled the photo using the ejection port as a reference with an approximate length of 2.390 for a Rem short action.
It "appears" to me that the cartridges are 358 Win, trimmed to about 1.950. But the base measuement seems to closer to 30 Remington. The tricky thing is that the spitzer projectile lying on the left next to them looks close to .338 caliber... So I'm thinking a shortened 35-30 Rem is a possibility.
Of course, it could be a .590 Blunderbuss, photo-shopped to occupy the minds of curious tinkers.

Just looking at the picture that cartridge doesn't apear to fit that beautiful rifle.
I want to say it's a 35 Whelen.
As the OP stated, the rifle and the spritzer have nothing to do with the cartridges in question.
Well, one thing is for certain - that's one beautiful rifle!
I thought the neck looked longer than the diameter but that seems to be an illusion.
