9.3x72R is it a candidate for paper patching?

New member here, have read a lot of the info available but have a question about whether my rifle is a candidate for Paper patched bullets.

The bore has very tall and narrow lands, there is some pitting of the grooves close to the chamber but the lands are sharp and the rest of the bore looks great

    Here's what I have.
Just slugged the bore on my 9.3x72R drilling circa 1925.

    Across the groves- .365

    Across the lands- .3445-3455

    6 lands and grooves

    Land width- .052

    Groove width- .131

I'd like to paper patch a lead slug for this.

I have a Lyman mold #358430, it casts a plain base .358 bullet at 199gr of pure lead. I'd like to give it two wraps of .002 for a total diameter of .366-.367. What size sizing die should I order for the final size and lube on this bullet.

What do you think? Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks
    AWS

If your measurements are correct it would take 4 wraps of 16# paper as you are showing a .021 difference between groove and bore diameter. I have never tried to patch that big a gap before. Fact is I have never seen a rifle with that deep a grooves.

I will double check and try and post a picture of the slug.

Got out a sharper bladed caliper and dug out a new micrometer.

    Groove diameter .364

    between lands .3445

    land width .047

    groove width .147

not very good with a camera, I blacked the grooves so they would show up.

I just got some info back from the guys at doublegun forum and it is Henry style rifling in England and Express rifling in Germany and was designed for paper patching. How would I go about doing it.

would the deeper rifling be a Mo Better situation for PP?

I would think so, but not near experienced enough to reason it out.

i played with some 9mm patched up to 375 with decent results just make sure you wrap the paper in the direction of rifling in case it doesn't get cut

More better...no..I don't think so. A bit to much paper to expect it to come off the muzzle uniformly.

My CZ-550 has a somewhat exaggerated bore x groove form also--4 rights Mauser pattern, .352" x .366". Groove depth = .007", which is larger than any I've dealt with to date.

The good news is that it shoots cast boolits quite well, and the small number of paper-patched I've tried did well also. These were unalloyed lead #358430s, about .359" as-cast, given 2 wraps of 9# bond airmail paper. No sizing, and a dip in LLA after the wraps were dried. These shot quite well, and I really didn't know what I was doing at the time. In spite of that, the experiment worked.

This rifling form shoots j-words well, also. Never say "never", never say "always" in this hobby field. Sola me dos centavos.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.

I am about to start running paper patch bullets in my 9.3x62mm. Recently purchased a 9.3bbl for my Blaser R8. I have been paper patching for .375Win(Ruger #1[rebarrel from 300win mag]) and 458Win(Ruger #1). Have to get another set of Corbin dies for my press I see.... I hate the waits involved. Carl L.

Got the same rifling in a 9.5x52R. Go for the paper.

I think I'd size to .347 and put on 3 wraps of standard printer paper, bringing the total to .365. But that's just me. I'd be interested to hear what you settle on and the results.

Wouldn't it be an idea to have a core diameter that requires two wraps of 'regular' paper to the groove size required? If they'll fit the throat that is.
