Surplus 303 British (if you can find it anymore!) will normally be the MkVII round which is a 174 grain spitzer bullet at about 2440 fps.

Thanks DDJ. How about surplus brass then?

The brass is almost always berdan primed for 303 surplus. I purchase PPU 303 from AIM surplus, it is boxer reloadable and shoots nicely. http://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.as...e=.303+British It is very often out of stock but always gets replenished.

I would stay clear of any surplus .303 ammo. Bad reports all round.

As far as brass goes, if you can get hold of Canuck Dominion DIZ brass it is great. I have hundreds dating 1942, all boxer primed and it is indestructable. The quality is better than new brass and it was war time manufacture.

If you found some Greek .303 with the HXP headstamp you'd have some nice surplus. Not much around anymore.

I roll my own in winchester brass with Sierra prohunter 180's. I haven't gotten to casting for .303 yet. Hell i haven't even slugged the barrel, I've only mic'd the muzzle at .315ish. (Mines a 2 groove No4mk1)

ETA- I finally throat slugged my Enfield - pretty nigh unto 0.316"

I have a case of Pakistani .303 that has about 25% normal firing, about 40% hangfires
of a fraction of a second and the rest misfire. Not a lot of fun. I have bought a few small
lots of real British WW2 vintage and had some lots work fine and some 100% misfire.
Kinda frustrating, I like .303s and wish there was cheap ammo available. I wonder
how much is inherent in the primer chemistry and how much is bad storage
    conditions.

I have heard that the HPX Greek is really good ammo if you can find it.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

HXP 303 Brit made after the 50's is like the holy grail for Enfield shooters. I had a couple of Bandoliers of some 71 HXP that I hold all my other 303 Brit reloads to in regards to accuracy. Awesome brass (boxer primers with a very light stab crimp) and accurate to boot. I got nearly 10 reloads out of that brass as well.
