Hi to all,
Some of you may remember the range cleanout that took 2 days to do, back in February. Well, I went back to that range last week (Nov. 22) and fetched the lead. Prior to casting, I had to sift it... and do the sifting the night preceeding the casting session (sifted until around 3AM). It was beat the clock !!!! I wanted to finish up casting WW lead, in addition to this batch of range lead prior to December 1st. And to do while we had record breaking temperatures this past Friday, Sunday, and Monday. All is done now! And just in time since today (Tuesday) was a rainy day and not much better weather predicted for Wed and Thursday.
Thought I would share some pictures. At 4:30PM it was getting dark, and at 5:00PM, completely dark. On Sunday, I did not bring my light, but brought it Monday. Much better to see what is in the pot! The only light at the shop is the one above the garage door (which goes on by a sensor), but where I cast is not under this overhead light.... so I really needed to have additional light.
The picture I took at about 5:00PM is blurry, but you can get an idea of the set up.
A labor of love, this is for sure................
Will weigh up Monday's casting probably tomorrow.
On Sunday, the weigh in was 462 pounds of finished ingots and on Friday, I believe it was about 112 pounds. I believe I am getting about 60% yield in finished ingots. When I do the weigh in tomorrow, I will be able to figure out the total "dross" (since I weigh the sifted particulates, and also the dross that I skim off the pot); once the total dross is figured out, I will be able to arrive at the total weight of lead removed from the range. And I have seen over the past few years, a decrease in yield
Stay tuned.............

Hi friends,
A doctor did an Internet search, and found my website http://www.captainenterprises.com and sent me an email regarding some sheet lead he had. As it turns out, he thought it was very coincidental that I had a tribute to my mentor, and father figure, Lou Strasser, posted on my website. He let me know that he lived one street away from Lou !!! In my reply to his email, I gave him my phone numbers. And he called me this morning in regard to my buying the sheet lead he had on hand. I went to his office, and there is a room that had been used to take X-Rays. He just moved his practice to this facility and he is planning to revamp this former X-Ray room. The 55 pounds of sheet lead I bought today represents probably a 3x3 or 3X2 foot section on the floor. Now.... there are 4 walls !!!! Sheet lead waiting to be reclaimed !!! And 2 doors. He may be removing the inner door (which connects to another room) and I will be able to take this door away and after I reclaim the lead, pay him for it (a price better than what he could fetch at a scrap yard). I hope he follows through on this renovation. This is very exciting... to come across pure lead... sheets that bend like paper!
Stay tuned......

All out of stock of clipons but, in my travels in the shop, I found a partially filled box of stickon ingots.... I forget the notation I had for the weight, but I think around 35 pounds, give or take (I think closer to 39 pounds, but not sure); maybe someone would be interested in a combo of stickon and range lead (and my range lead is on a par with clipon in terms of hardness....). If anyone is interested in 1 combo box, please send me a PM. However, Dave (ColColt), will have first dibs on this, if so interested.
And I will keep people posted on the mother lode!
I do hope the doctor goes ahead with his plan to renovate this former X-Ray room !!!
Stay tuned.........
...And I hope everyone has a most joyous holiday season!

First off, HaPpY NeW YeAr to all.................
I cut a tiny square of the sheet lead I fetched "last year" .... I used tin snips to do the task. E-Z to do!
I took a reading on my Cabine Tree tester; and the dial indicator needle barely budged; it move to about 1 tick away from zero.... I think .01 and the cross reference chart shows .020 - .030 BHN 5 Pure Lead. So this sheet is "pure lead"; it is about 1/8th inch thick and easily foldable !!!
I have not heard back from the doctor. I hope I do; if not, I will guess that he will leave the walls as is and paint a different color. But I will probably be in luck if he wishes to make this room bigger!!!
Anywhooo, I have attached a picture of my little snippet.
With kind regards to all,
~ Kathie
