I was in the local big box sporting good store and a couple was looking at handguns. I heard the youngster behind counter state "the 380 and 9mm are almost the same thing" . I don't think so. am i off?

I don't know how to answer this but I wouldn't say that you were off. We all know the difference but to an inexperienced eye they do look similar.
The other guy is right. The key word here is 'almost'.
Sort of like the difference between a .22Long, and .22Long Rifle.

.380 uses a .355" bullet. 9mm uses a .356" bullet and a slightly longer case. 9mm is more powerful, but I refuse to try and stop either one. Both are deadly.
There is no doubt, in some conversations, I could honestly said, "the 380 and 9mm are almost the same thing."
That aside, years ago at a Gunshow, I heard one young fella tell another young fella say, "I'd rather have a AK47, than a AR15, because the AK47 can shoot both 223 and 762x39, where as the AR15 can only shoot 223."

I have both 380 and 9mm. They are very similar. I size both to .357. About the only difference is bullet weight and recoil. 380 uses a 90g bullet and 9mm use 125g.
Tell you though, 380 ACP in a blowback style gun has barely any recoil. Its a hoot to shoot that all day. Quick follow up shots.

380 is a 21,500 PSI cartridge versus 35,000 PSI for the 9x19.

Mal Paso means Bad Pass, just so you know.
One of my old Astra 400s 9mm/38 with a worn recoil spring would shoot 5 .380s in a row reliably. Any more in the magazine would gum up the works. The difference in recoil between the .380 and the 9mm Luger in that pistol wasn't "almost the same"haha!

Almost is relative. 22 Long and 22 LR can be fired in the same gun. 38's can be fire in a 357 but not the other way around. Same for the performance of the 308 & 30/06. Almost is almost and not the same. Can't say they were wrong but also can't say they were correct.
