    Question For Folks In Texas

Is it legal for a private citizen in the state of Texas to use hollow point ammunition in his home defense revolver? My cousin who moved to Texas several years ago has expressed his concerns about this to me. I do not live in Texas and have no idea how to find and answer to this in the Texas legal codes. Can he keep it loaded with the hollow points he currently has or does he need to find some non-hollow point ammunition?

He also has a 12 gauge pump gun so he is not relying only on his revolver.

I hope he never has need for either of the above, but while unlikely, I would hate to see him get into trouble if the occasion comes up, for using the wrong ammo.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but he lives in a suburb just north of Dallas. I am not sure what county that would be.

Thanks in advance to any and all who can shed some light on this subject.

Except for my time in the Service, and until I retired a couple years ago- I lived in a North Dallas suburb,
almost within sight of DFW airport since 1964.

He'll be in either Dallas, or Tarrant county (Fort Worth).
As far as I know, both mirror state law.
There may be a state law that prevents counties and cities from getting 'creative' on this matter.

As far as hollow points go, its about all anybody carries, or has for self defense.
The small expensive boxes of self defense type ammo you see in the gun stores is almost all some sort of fancy hollow point.
If anyone has ever had any sort of problem with it, it sure is news to me.

Self defense is a big issue here, and there are very few restrictions on it.

In recent years, you can now have a concealed weapon in your car without a CCW license--just don't take it in somewhere.
Places that have the proper 'no guns allowed' signs-- you can carry concealed in those places now too-
however; if they ask you to leave, you do have to.

Heck, we recently changed the law where its now legal to carry brass knuckles.

Tell your cousin to join the Texas Rifle Association.
They'll keep him informed on our laws here.

Hollow points are perfectly legal in every city I’ve lived in, in Texas.

Hollow points are legal in the state. FMJ is sometimes restricted for hunting.
    Whatever!

Was gonna say it sounded like he was from Jersey. Hollow points are legal there as long as you don't commit a crime with them - I think.

Yep, and no coatings either. It was in response to Black Talons. But if I remember correctly the law is vague enough to mean any type of coating on the bullet.

I'm a 5th Gen native Texan and live north of the pit called Dallas in Collin County. Tell him he's legal to use any kind of ammo he wants in his firearms. There is no ammo restriction law on the books in The Republic. Feel free to have your friend contact me if he needs help on this. I'm retired LE from the area.
