Now That is a score I’m especially looking for the soft stuff‼️ But I got the Pox today so not the least bit interested in the room today. Sorted some alloy yesterday getting ready for my first day casting of bollits. And making of boolit lube and sizing and loading and sending them down range etc.

I decapped, tumbled and loaded my 87 pieces if 350 Legend brass. I used the penta HP 38-200 over 21g of 11FS and a CCI 450 primer.

I was going to chronograph the load yesterday but it was so windy I sat out the first relay when my target stand blew over. Had another target blow off the stand but by that time I had 2 targets up.

Great Job Mondoair. Nothing like success to keep the momentum going, especially when working in less than stellar temperature like AK has in early May. Keep the stove going if you have one even if just a campfire with a heat reflector nearby to keeps the legs warm.

Well the saga continues. Managed to load up some of the 220 grain monsters to test along with the 150 grains. Had 20 rounds four different loads of 150‘s stopped after every five to look at the barrel a lotta Ash and stuff in there but no lead. Did the same with the 220 grains two rounds at a time because I didn’t have any load data for them. they were pushing about 884 and 925 like that but maybe I’m getting lead I haven’t determined that for sure. Must be my alloy too hard or too soft don’t know yet but they all went bang. Had real good accuracy on some of those little poppers. These are running through a XDM with a 5 1/4 barrel 10 mm. 300185

Fitted a gas check seater to my Lube-A-Matic 2 today, and found the boolit ejector lock ring was fitted incorrectly when originally assembled, on top of the housing & should have been under which didn't allow the gas check seater to fit.
After a quick reassemble, all good allowing the seater to slip in place......& seated some hundred gas checks.....
Not overly impressed, short stroke, but the gas check had a lip you could feel with a thumbnail.
When seated deeper there is a smooth finish down past the gas check, but still happy.

I don't remember if I posted this or not but last week I spilled several cigar boxes of cast, sized and lubed bullets while moving them from the garage to my new loading room. Today I finished sorting and reboxing them. I only culled about a dozen from being damaged or gritty.

You're having way too much fun. How's the new loading room? It's warm here today and I'm out in my loading room avoiding the heat and flies.

Its coming along nicely, Thanks for asking! Our former housekeeper came over yesterday and again for a few hours this morning and helped me do some of the things that I needed help with, like step stool and ladder stuff. I think everything is present and accounted for. She is one of those people that are good at organization and was a big help. I need to learn how to post pictures, I took a few along the way.

There is some older load data out there, surprising how much, take a trip through this thread:

https://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?438273-Looking-for-a-MEC-Loading-Chart

There are several links to older loading manuals.

Try searching from outside the forum and you might come up with some data that you can use. Multiple wordings, include "castboolits" in some of the search strings. You might find what you are looking for.

Watch for the earliest Lyman shotgun manuals in S&S, they popup occasionally.

Good luck.

Ran the first part of a batch of 308 Norma brass through my Pro 2000 as an experiment to try save time by doing most of the brass work in progressive mode.

Brass is cleaned in a media tumbler, body sized on a Lee Classic Cast, then the necks are heat treated.

The Pro 2000 deprimes on station one, mandrel sizes on station two, and primes on the downstroke. One handle pull instead of three.

It will save a significant chunk of time, three operations within one pull of the handle.

Of the sixty or so cases, I had four with no primer, one primer upside down, and one sideways. The primer transfer bar was also not picking up every primer.

The no primers was fixed by paying more attention. The upside down was the first primed case - the primer punch was for small primers, not large, it had to be changed.

The sideways, I have no idea. I stripped the priming assembly, cleaned the retracting pin at the bottom of the primer feed tube and the recess it rides in, re-centered the primer punch in the shellplate, and it didn't happen again.

I lowered the linkage on the outside of the primer tube housing a bit, forcing the transfer bar to retract to the limit of it's travel, and the primer pickup with the transfer bar seems to be reliable now.

I bought this press as a box of rusty parts a couple of years ago, cleaned them up, put it together, and been looking at it since. RCBS manufacturing spared no expense on that one, it's a fantastic machine.

Well, not today, but this weekend.

I pan lube, but I haven't been entirely satisfied with the lube fill-out the way I'd been doing it, which was putting the room temp pan in the freezer for 15 minutes or so to get the wax to break free from the pie pan, then pushing the bullets out from the top once the wax warms back up to room temperature. It seemed that when the wax pulled away from the pan, it often pulled away from parts of the lube grooves as well. Never seemed to matter much to the barrels, as even with incomplete lube fill-outs I really haven't had issues with leading in anything. Still, it bothered me.

I made a "kake cutter" out of a .44 Mag shell with a bored out primer pocket and a nail, but was creating blisters on my thumbs using it. Thought there had to be a better way, and figured one out. In one of our bits and bobs cans in the garage I found several washers that would just allow a shell body to drop through, but not allow the rim to pass. I bored appropriate sized holes in a 1" thick slab of wood (roughly 4"x6"), dropped the shells into the appropriate washers, and then screwed the washers down while making sure the shells had smooth clearances.

I can now center the slab over a plastic tub, and tap the pointy end of the 4" nail with a hammer to knock the boolit out of the cutter, and catch the nail between my thumb and finger before it can drop through into the tub.

So far I'm set up to use a .45-70 shell for .45 bullets, a .303 shell for .308 bullets, and a .38 shell for 9mm bullets. In addition to the original slightly expanded mouth .44 Mag shell. The same washer does double duty for the .308 and .44 Mag shells. When I get around to casting up more .38 Special bullets I'll probably expand a .357 mag shell to about .360 for cutting purposes.

@Mal Paso get the BO upper - it's a blast. 1:10 twist. Cheap to load and shoot, decent for hunting except straight wall states. Good cast performance. You can use BCG from the 223. 223 brass is easy to convert. Mine seems to last forever.
Got a henry in 308,x51 brass doesn't fit. Trimmed a bunch of LC. Had to grind 10 thou off the shell holder to chamber. I pulled and reloaded these cases 3 times to get it all right. MOA @ 100, amax & IMR4895 work fine. Now to cast some 145gr GC & PC when temp gets down to 90F.

I got some Lilgun powder tried it in two cartridge's was not real happy with it in .351 WSL . I am using a Hornady 140 FTX sized to .351 in the old cartridge I am probably going to go back to 180 weight range. I might just swage my own bullet for this . The reason for disappointment was I am only getting 1700 f/s and pressure seems to be near Max? Load is not even at book max for same weight bullet in .357 Mag. case and it has lower pressure and capacity.

The second was .30 carbine and the Lee .32 caliber 90 grain tumble lube bullet . The bullets were powder coated rather then lubed that were seated a bit deeper then I thought they should be or I would get a round that would not chamber . Velocity was just under 2000 f/s accuracy was 2 inches at 25 yards I need to shoot further later .

Sounds like your Lil'Gun load in the .351 isn't anywhere near max, in fact it's not even generating enough pressure to get Lil'Gun up into its' "sweet spot" which starts around 25kpsi. Where are you getting your load data? Are you shooting it from a pistol-length barrel?

I think you are right today after doing some measurements on spent cases I bumped the load to 18.5 grains primers looked much better . Then I went to 19 grains primers looked quite normal and cases had soot on the forward quarter of them. I will do some more work with the round I use this same bullet unsized in a 27" MGM Contender barrel chambered in .357-44 Bain & Davis it is very accurate and worked well on one deer . It is a mild load pressure wise of AA 1680 doing 2200 f/s I can get more speed but really do not need it . I also have a 10" barrel in that caliber I loose 500 f/s from the 27" barrel and the load shoots terrible.

I have a feeling the appearance of primers may have to do with the gun firing from an open breach and a low pressure . Max. pressure for the old round is 48,200 cup a bit higher then .357 magnum so for data I start with upper end .357 magnum data . Max .357 data for LILGUN under a 140 grain bullet of another make is 18.9 grains , I seat the FTX out past the crimp groove as it seats to deep in case and load data should be about the same as other bullet .

I am shooting it from a 1916 made Winchester model 1907 I size the .357 bullets to .351 . I have recently started using a die I cut on a 1 ton arbor press to size bullets it works better then a reloading press as power is over the entire range of motion rather then top of the ram stroke.

I have now worked up to 20 grains of LILGUN in the .351 WSL under a sized to .351" Hornady 140 FTX bullet no pressure signs cases drop next to me.

Lil'Gun was designed for the .410 shotgun, but it works very well in smaller rifle cartridges, especially the Hornet and .22 Lovell. I burned quite a bit of it in a .357 Max some years ago. It has a "fat tail" to the pressure/time curve, so it isn't so good in short barrels, but it will give you higher MV for a given peak pressure than the old standbys. In a gas-operated semi-auto this may not be good, because port pressures will be higher, and revolver guys complain about it gas-cutting the top strap.

Judging pressure by primer appearance is very imprecise. Time was that it was all the amateur wildcatters had, but now we can get chronographs for a few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand, and we should use them.

Where published data is sparse or non-existent I've been using Quickload software for almost ten years now. Look into it.

My old model 1907 is a unlocked breach recoil operated rifle so primers can be distorted by more then pressure as the bolt moves and case moves in the chamber .I have yet to run the 20 grain load of little gun over the chronograph . I am using trimmed .350 Legend cases deleting the small semi rim throwing another issue in the mix . A side is the pointed 140 FTX (sized at .351") is the same length as the original Winchester 180 grain soft point.
Thank you for the information about the longer pressure curve on Lilgun it is what I need and probably why the thick case is has soot on the forward part .

Patched up an old Lyman Crusher. This is I believe the second model, that looks like an RCBS.

I bought it very cheaply, as it was effectively damaged. The hard stops were gone and there was excessive cam over.

The base of the casting that is the built in hard stop against each linkage arm was broken, so I used an epoxy that is designed for filling casting defects to cover up the gashes.

302847

Then, to re-create the hard stop, a few one inch washers, epoxied to each other and the frame.

302848

I've been looking for a dedicated press-type backup priming solution that has primer seating depth control, and this - with a simple Lee Ram Prime, will do the job.

Thanks. Been pourin the silver stream since the 70’s

Yep, and those are the hard way! Takes a bit of skill to run that mold. I cheat and use a MP Mold.

I got impatient waiting on the new MP I ordered. Lol gotta love the various pins. Penta, cone, flat, round etc. He does a fantastic job. Does Eric still hp existing lyman moulds? He too does/did a great job.

I cast some Lee 105 SWC, some C309170F, and some 309 230 gr bullets.
And I answered a "What if" question by reloading and test firing two 2-1/2" .410 shells featuring FFFFG and 7-1/2 shot.

A customer came to our shop recently with a cardboard box full of reloaded 20 gauge rounds. Every round appeared to have been recovered from a mud bath so she "donated" these to us. I saw the opportunity to salvage the lead from all 170 rounds for future needs. My hands are sore from cutting down the hulls but the lead shot was clean and will give me some spare alloy which will be melted in a separate cast iron pot away from the casting furnace. Not that I need any more 1-pound bricks to pick from but I hold on to the concept that tossing these would be close to a criminal violation of the "waste not - want not" rule.

Expected to get my brand-new Mp But it did not show up. Ran an experiment With a One or 2 gallon aluminum pressure cooker as a melting pot. Filled it full of range lead and turned on the gas. Did not go well burned a hole in the bottom and lead ran down into my burner and made a little bit of a mess. Experimented also with laluminum heavy duty cooking pot the one with the metal handles with a great big rivets Seems to work well. My last session I got my cast iron Dutch oven to hot and it tweeked split the side. Not all that productive a day.

Aluminum even if it works at first, can fail suddenly. It is very weak at lead melting temperatures.

Propane dealers often have 5 gallon propane tanks with bad or incorrect valves, pull the valve, fill with water to make sure the propane is gone, empty and cut in half. Refrigerant tanks work too but they are thinner. Restaurant supplies have stainless steel steam table inserts too.

I inspected, gas checked, sized and lubed a few hundred 38-200s. Got a bunch more to do. Ordered another box of gas checks.

I got too heavy-handed with my cast iron pot, trying to pry out a large ingot that got stuck. It did crack the side from the top down, but I still use it. The molten lead has such surface tension that even when the level reaches the crack, it will not leak out.

Unsolicited advice: If you can find someone with a torch, you might be able to braze the crack in your pot; just an idea.

I got 300 hollowpoints and 600 solids of the 38-200 RCBS clone gas checked and sized. I've got the bench cleared to work up new loads. The new batch of 11FS is producing 100 fps less velocity than the first batch, more in line with recently published data for the 350 Legend. Don't think it was the chronograph as I had 2 good sessions on 2 days at 1950 fps and the latest loads are 1850. 170g Hornady SP was running 2,000 fps and could go 2,300 but I was 3.3g light according to Hodgdon.

I got one of these semi laboratory grade scales a while back. Just for fun, i decided to try to see just how consistent I was using my Redding 10x micrometer powder drop. Loaded up 9.4 gr of WAC for my 41 mag. The average for 25 rounds was 9.435 and the extreme spread was 0.18. I could usually tell by feel if I was going to be heavy or light. I like it a lot better than trying to eyeball with a beam scale.
Yes, I am well aware that that level of precision and accuracy in weight measurements aren't necessary for handgun stuff, but it's good practice for rifle stuff later on.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220821/db481eaa6c8fd8e564c3d15cb828ffcc.jpg

Figured out how to rearrange the loading room to gain a little more walking space. No walls; just sloping ceilings so all of the space with headroom is right down the middle. Then I saw that a few other things could be moved around to improve the situation further. Wishing I had worked on the design a little longer; pretty sure I could have gained a lot more vertical space and still satisfied the architectural committee of the HOA. No flaming; our HOA is fantastic. After all the rearranging some brass went into the polisher.

What scale? What did it cost and do you like it?It is the A&D EJ123 and it runs about 400 bucks. It's really nice. I've read that scales that get plugged in work so much better than battery powered ones. This one has a built in bubble level and 4 adjustment legs. The only real downside is the calibration button is underneath instead of on top with the rest of the buttons.

I just use a wadded-up shop rag to push and crank. Have done hundreds of cases needing as much as 1/4" taken off this way.

Task today was to final size, chamfer and expand 57 cases for the .25 Stevens centerfire project, using a 310 tong tool.

These were previously cut down from 1.400" Hornet brass to 1.125" using the above technique. Took about 10-15 seconds actual cutting time. It does need some muscle, but the hand doesn't cramp up from gripping that tiny crank handle.

Loaded and tested some light Bullseye loads with the Lee 356-102-1r in 9mm. I bought this low weight for 9mm to save some lead and to crossover to 380 ACP when I start loading that. Interestingly the starting load was ejecting brass almost straight up—a problem I've had with Titegroup using the same bullet. But increasing charge by 0.1 gr started the brass kicking in a clean arc that worked fine with the brass catcher. My lube still isn't doing enough though: no lube star on the muzzle. Using Ben's Red, pan-lubed.

Later I scored some Unique at the LGS, after over a year of searching. I passed up one opportunity to buy an 8-lb can, and have been kicking myself for it ever since. But today I finally found some and picked up two pounds. Can't wait to see what this can do in 45-70 and 22 Hornet.

My boolit is the Accurate 40-180 BG but without the lube grove. I'm getting that guy just over 1300 fps with about 14 grain of AA#9. But I was looking to tone it down just a little so the steel challenge guys don't get so pissed and I can actually double tap with acceptable accuracy.

Cleaned up the little bits and pieces from setting the reloading room up. Loaded a few .357 Mags and 4 dozen .30-'06 for the M-1 Garand. Found a few bullets that look a lot like 53 grain Sierra Match Kings but didn't match anything else I had and they were all 0.3-0.4 gr light of 53 grains so I loaded them up as .22-250 plinkers. Went for a cruise on the Sportster, passed a 5 gallon bucket sitting next to a mailbox on the side of the road.

At 45 mph it looked like was 3/4 full of brass. Had to make a u-turn to make sure I wasn't imagining things.

I wasn't. And the bucket had FREE scrawled on it. Quick scruff through the bucket found a handful of 7.62x54r boxer primed. Time to swap the Harley for the GMC.

75% of the bucket was steel but I did get 100+ 7.62x54r, and a bunch of 7 Remington Magnums, 30-30's, 357's, 7.62x39 that got sorted into the keep pile. Bunches of brass 223, 308 45 ACP and a few more of the usual suspects to go for scrap. Steel will go in the recycle bucket, not the landfill. Unfortunately it doesn't pay as well as brass.

Only 95 today so I fired up the Pro Melt 2 and cast 5-600 38-200s with the 8 cavity MP Mold. The pot is dripping like crazy and I'm tire of cleaning every few pots. I ordered a new PID from Auber for my original Pro Melt. The thermostat died, the Ink Bird PID shows symptoms of being a fake so $50 shipped sounds like a deal to get that pot running again.

Mark this date and let us know how many years 3 pounds lasts!

Finally after taking apart my old reloading room and moving, I cast boolits for the first time in four years.

Made some .380 brass at the range and also made up a cake cutter for pan-lubing .45-70. I've used the suggestion of a member here to make several: paper patch an unsized bullet extra-thick using a receipt. Flare the case mouth enough to accept the fat paper-patched bullet, seat it, then pull it. This expands the case mouth just several thousandths. A little trial and error and I've got a cake cutter tight enough to clean the driving bands, leaving lube only in the grooves, but not so tight as to shave lead or swage the bullet down.

Also picked up a toaster oven and some miscellaneous pans at the local salvage store, for lube, heat cycling molds, and trying out PC at some point in the future. Running some heat cycles on a new MP HP, PB "227-640 Hornet" mold tonight.

16/1 pure and pewter alloy always comes out shiny! Kills my to PC them.lol. I normally weigh first and then PC color seperate in 1 grain increments. Got too excited and am tumbling some in a mix of Smoke's traffic purple with black and blue mixed in. Might make some in the brown I used in my sinkers I have mixed up and left over.

I took my mold apart yesterday and cleaned off a little bit of tinning. I put it back together and lubed it up. Ran about 15 pounds of 16/1 alloy through it again today. I hand polished my HP pins with mothers chrome polish. My boolits fell right off the pins when I opened the mold up for the first 2/3’s of my casting session today. Towards the end I had to give the pins a slap with my glove and they would then release and fall off.

I bought an inch pound screwdriver style torque wrench a while ago and today I remounted my 6-24X50 Vortex Sight on my 18" 223 Wylde using a level and Loctite this time. I had it on the 350L and the scope slid all the way to the stops. I put 20 inch pounds on the M4 screws, will see how that does, tomorrow hopefully.

Neiko from Amazon. I had bought some of their wrenches which were decent. Obviously I had the screws too lose but all I could find for specs was 15-25 inch pounds so I went 20.

Thanks for the tip! Mine only came with round hollow point and blank (flat-point) pins. Maybe because it's only a .227 boolit? The solids cast much easier. I'll return to the HPs but solids meet my needs for now as I work up a small game load. A couple good suggestions I've been given are to polish the pins and to coat them with a chalk solution in alcohol.

Yesterday I pulled down 150 300 BO that I assembled a week ago. Why?

Day before yesterday I started to load up some 9 mm Lee 358-125-RF with 5 grains of herco. The charge just didn't look just right weighed on my reading beam scale. Weighed on my Chinese electronic scale 4.5 grains. Got the old hard to use lee scale down from the back of the top shelf, and again 4.5 grains. Then I tried to balance the beam on "0". No go. I have 2 reading beam scales, so I got the other one out. It would not "0" ether. ????
Then moved the pans and hangers around and both worked fine. I got out the black marker and put X'es on all parts of one and O's on the other.
Now back to why I pulled down the 300 BOs. I had loaded them with the scale that was still together on the bench. I pulled one of them down and instead of having 18.0 gr of 1680 there was only 17.5.
So out came the Hornady cam lock bullet puller. Much faster than the inertia puller.
Problem no. 2.
All of these boolits were gas checked. 1/2 of them came off while pulling the boolit. It is not easy to get a gas check out of a bottleneck case.I used a small screwdriver to punch the check down into the case dumped the powder and got out my tweezers and holding the case above my head, proceeded to shake and poke the check till I could grab it with the tweezers. After I had done about 15, I found that if I pulled the boolit out very slow, I could get about 85% of the checks to come out with the boolit.
Project for today.
1. Replace the checks on the boolits where they came off.
2. Properly charge the cases.
3. Re-seat the boolits.

Had scrounged up some 125lb or so wheel weights; SOWW mostly with some COWW. As temps have gone down a bit, decided to make ingots. It was still too hot! LOL.
I cast for 9mm and 10mm. Still learning.

I rebuilt my Pro Melt control box with a new PID from Auber. When I was putting casting back together I got an Imkbird kit from Amazon. It never worked right and someone here said there were fakes. The symptoms sounded like my PID so I ordered one from Auber which was what I had before. The are $50 shipped which is very good for the quality you get.

Rain today so I'm headed out to the shop to clean the old Pro Melt and fire it up.

Nice! Is that the Lee mould?
My 1873 doesn’t so wadcutters but my Marlin will if it’s a button nose. I’m wondering if I could make those work. The 358495 works fine but I do like a Lee 6 cavity for pure speed.

Yes on the tests. Better than most autos not so good as large mags but way more rounds on the bears. Got to do what you can the 200gr flat nose at about 1200fps better than nothing. I think it’s better to start with industrial strength pepper spray and maybe save the ammo. Bear’s are scary Big‼️‼️

Garage sale 230lbs $100. Coww too hard to get and more expensive. Trying to guess the alloy. About 8 bn and very shiny. Tested with hydrocloric acid. Melted below 600F. Water hardened to 14bn tested with pencils ✏️. Going to cast some.

I cleaned my old Pro Melt. I had used some questionable alloy and garbage metal was stuck to the stainless pot. Usually lead alloy will peal off, not this crud. I tore the whole thing apart and removed the pot so I could use a torch on it. I used the opportunity to remove the old dead thermostat and replace the power cord strain relief. I cleaned the valve seat and stem and put it back together.

I had rebuilt the PID yesterday so I filled the pot halfway and fired it up. I started casting the 38-200 mold that was still on the hotplate and ran the pot down. Not one drip which was why I'm moving back from my Pro Melt 2. I had filled it back up ready to start casting when my neighbor came knocking. Tree down, our road was closed. Unlike my Pro Melt 2 I just shut it down and I played tractor while my neighbor played chainsaw. We got paid in Romaine Lettuce, country life.

Look at that spout on the old Pro Melt, much easier to see than the Pro Melt 2. This was a rebuild, several owners ago it it really got trashed. It was well worth bringing back!
