Cast 30lbs of boolits today. Bulk of it was the Lee 356 95RF. These are gonna be for the newly acquired LCP Custom I just purchased to replace the one I gave the wife. She doesn't shoot all that much so I had been lacking at keeping a stash of ready to go boolits. I also cast some RCBS 270-150's and MP 227-75 Nato's.

Clean and fluxed about 120 lbs. of range lead and wheel weights, got it into manageable 2+ lb. muffins. This plus the 100+ robot counterweight from Wednesday. All that is left is ~ 30 lbs. of telephone lead that has to have the wires stripped out before melting. And a 50+ lb. bucket of dross that will be heated one more time.

I got it from another guy and I'll bet there's another 20 lbs. in there.

And made reloading opportunities in 30-06, 7x57 and 303 British.

Glued a table back together, cleaned part of my bench, ventilated a couple of old style propane tanks so I can scrap them out, started cleaning out a barn at the farm.

Been a busy day, time to fire up the Harley and go for a cool off ride and maybe mooch a beer from a buddy who lives in Maybee.......

In the process of getting about 8000 5.56 cases sized, cases trimmed, chamfered, primer pockets "de-crimped", and ready to load when I become somewhat housebound in about a month. Hip revision surgery coming up, could put me on limited outdoor work for a spell. Figured I'd put my time to good use.

Been giving away ammo (for good whiskey) to family that wasn't prepared for the sudden disappearance of everything, and they are nervous. I figured it ain't doing me any good sitting down in the loading room, and I'm not gonna be like my dad, and end up passing everything to his only son who reloads, who already has way too darn much himself in the first place. Gonna start giving it to my son and his wife that shoot now. I enjoy loading it almost more than I do shooting it.

The worst case scenario is 8-12 weeks on a walker, as opposed to just one when I originally got hip put it. But doctors continually try to emphasize that is not likely, but to only be prepared for it. Hardware got recalled, but mine lasted 9 years before it started failing.

Not trying to detract from the topic but I do understand. I have a Dacron Tube graft going from my Sternum to about 4" below my groin into each leg. It has been there for 14 years and still going strong. This is also the second one. The First only lasted 3.5 years. Spent the last couple days disassembling my pistol die sets from the Dillion press. Cleaning them all and resetting them. All my rifle ammo I do on a Redding T-7, so the dies are usually in and out and wiped off every time I use them. Reset the pistol die's, and decided to try a new load for my .40 M/P. Using a 175gr. Lee TC bullet, and usually 231 powder. Had some Bullseye sitting around, tried just over minimum charge as stated and went out back and ran a few threw, slapped the steel gongs with enough power I'm happy.

Well, last night I had a problem with my Lee LoadMaster. By the general reputation, you may say, "So, that is not unusual?" But, it is unusual; this press has loaded bushels of ammo over the years with very few problems once I got it lined out (bought it used years ago and it was a wreck). Recently started loading 44-40. First cycle I tried last night resulted in case not aligning with size die station 1. I did not even mash the frail case mouth, I caught it in time. The carrier bolt was loose and carrier out of alignment. Corrected that and then noticed the case feed height was slightly too low, not causing a problem yet, but it can -- another couple of nuts were slightly loose. Checked and serviced the press, all good. Finished loading my remaining supply of bullets, now I need to find time to cast and powder coat more. Until now, this press has had no problems;not so much as misalingned primer.

My experience with the Loadmaster was the opposite. I got everything up to snuff except for the blasted primer feed mechanism. No matter what I tried nothing worked consistently with that in 100 loadings : 1 or 2 ended up with sidewise primers, 5-9 cases came thru without a primer installed. I shudder to think of all that spilled and wasted power and wasted time because Lee killed the goose when they turned that piece of plastic loose amungst us.

Loaded up these three mini slugs:
266200

I'll take them to the range and see if they will cycle/shoot. Pretty sure it will go fine.

EDIT:
They are just a hair under 1 3/4". The intended shotgun is a Mossberg 590 A1. The tube holds 8. By my calculation, I should be able to get 12 in there for 12+1. Slugs.

I load a few short slugs like yours and they run fine out of my 500 , but if you're planning on a self-defense load you can make them not feed properly .

Rebuilt my RCBS Trim Pro.
I put those empty pill bottles to use. A few pieces of scrap wood, 1 1/2 Inch auger bit, some light sanding and the bottles slide into the holes. Great for all the loose screws, extra parts and what have you we all collect.
Nice rainy day project and keeps all flat surfaces from becoming catch-alls. The new one is ready for some final sanding and mounting.

I cast a pot full using 3 moulds in tandem Friday night; all Lee. The C309170 and TL 430 SWC turned out beautifully, the C309150F had wrinkled noses so I will recast them after cleaning and inspecting the mould. Last night I PC’d the 44 boolits. This is one of my favorite moulds and I’m itching to try it in my 44-40. I also loaded a few .30 Remington rounds with some leftover boolits to try.

I just came in from making 40# of Mav Dutchman 44-40 boolits. I only have one 6 cavity mold in that flavor, so it went a little slow as compared to using two. When I use three 6 cavity molds it is hard to keep each mold up to ideal temperature when tending the two 20# Lee pots; adding alloy, fluxing, resetting the flow rate. But, with two molds, I can manage all of that pretty well. I noticed today that my main pot, which is on a PID controller, kept getting the "OPEN CIRCUIT" warning every 10 minutes or so. It seems the Lee thermostat has topped out at 710 degrees F; probably due to age/use. 715F was my PID target anyway, so I just ran the pot without the PID. I will get a thermostat or by-pass the aging one. My second pot just keeps a hot supply of alloy that I can dip over to my main pot. That 40# represented the last of my scrap lead alloy. I have only a couple pounds of tin left. What is up next is RotoMetals 90:5:5 "Lyman #2" cut in half with their pure lead to yield 95:2.5:2.5 or there abouts.

Yep. Your experience seems to be common and mine rare. Mine was an absolute wreck when I got it second hand, the previous owner was showing me his his new Dillon which was running well. I noticed the Lee LM laying in the corner and asked about it, he said it was not worh 10 dollars, I offered 20 - he kept his 9mm dies. I got my 45 Colt dies and started having trouble right away. Followed all the directions. Called Lee and Mr. Lee, the elder, helped me over the phone to get it set up and sent parts free. Still had some trouble keeping index and flipping/missing primers on occasion. Things got worse called Lee again and I think it was the younder Mr. Lee that had me check for a cracked carrier when I described an audible click each stroke. Sure enough, it was spit. They sent me a care package of parts along with the carrier. It ran perfectly, original style primer fixture, for quite long time, then primer fails. By then folks on the SASS board reported imoortance of keeping the primer collection tube and primer seating well clean. I modified mine to pass the spent primers out of the bottom of the ram and into a clear hollow tube that I can empty. That was the end of my problems. The new and improved primer fixtures were awful until the last version, I still use my original versions. It is at least 20+ years old. I would get a new Dillon or Hornady right away if it broke down. 30-30, 32 SPCL, 40SW, 38SPCL, 357 mag, 44-40, and 45 Colt. I won't recommend it becasue so many folks have trouble with them.

lightman I wasn't given a bucket load but working at the range in the past couple weeks since I bought my Savage Axis 223 I have developed a horrible case of the Bends. I now have almost 3 gallon ice cream pails full of 223. I have sorted most of it so far into 3 groups; crimped primers, non-crimped primers and LC brass.

The non-crimped and LC I will keep for myself and the crimped is going to a friend. He is already equipped to deal with the crimps, I'm not.

I cast some of those MP 44 cal devastators - man it is hard to get proper nose fill out with the penta points... They look super cool when you get one, but I've got a 2 cavity mold and I get a perfect one about every 3rd cast. I tried a lot of things - hotter lead, more tin, got the mold hotter, pressure cast, etc... It's just a tricky mold.

After a while, I thought - I've got 30 lbs of 44 cal boolits... I kinda need 40 cal boolits... So I switched and cast about 15# of my 180 grain 40s.

Loaded up 100, 300 Blackout for a bolt Rem 700. I use the NOE 30XCB 2500 lube and aluminum gas check. They are right at 1850FPS with H110. Perfect for 100 meter dingers!! Plan on hunting in a couple months with it.

Also loaded up 90 284’s with J-words for a F-class match coming....

Then swept the floor and straightened up the bench a bit. Promised myself I would spend 15 minutes every time I reload cleaning up. Everything has a tendency to over run the benches....

Yesterday I tried out a power case trimmer that will remain nameless. One of the set screws kept coming loose so I was getting inconsistent case lengths. So today I pulled out a case gauge and it had very light rust on it. Pulled out every other case gauge and placed them in evaporust for a few hours. Rinsed them off, oiled them up well and placed them in the bag which I put oil in as well. Guess I forgot to oil them over the past few years. Ordered up some airtight containers so I don’t have this problem in the future.

After owning my Marlin Guide Gun for about 6 years, I FINALLY got a few cast bullets (cast two years ago) loaded yesterday. Today, hopefully, I will test for proper feeding and run them downrange, to check velocities, monitor pressures, and hope that I can keep them on paper.

These are 430 WNGC bullets, and my first attempt at powder coating! The process start to finish, presented lots of challenges! This was my first time using RL 7, boy, it sure meters nicely through my 60+ year old Ideal Powder measure!

I need to hurry up with my loading/testing. I like to do load development on hot days, to minimize the possibility of “over pressure” situations on a hot day when out shooting. I don’t think I have many 90 degree days left this year!

Will soon.....go shoot a few light load, 300 grain, powder coated, cast bullets, that I loaded for my 460 XVR. After a near 30 year hiatus, I’m slowly getting back! memtb

When my lead stash pile (roofing lead) started coming up short, moved it all to the garage. Sunday moved it all (500 pounds or so) to the shed from hell as my wife calls it. Used my Kubota L3800 with the front end loader all in one trip. Got tired of climbing over the pile everytime I opened the garage door. That bucket has paid for itself many times over as well as the Kubota. Probably one of my smarter buys. Then spent the rest of the day cleaning the crud off a WW1 german 77mm cannon shell casing. Hope fully will stock in the lathe to smooth down the brass then spend some time polishing it on my home made buffer. Frank

Oh, today was a special day in the reloading room.

The Postman recently delivered a used (San Diego) Star Lubesizer.
Today, I got it setup ...I put some oil on all the important places, then I pushed out the old lube, installed some new lube, put in a 40 cal die, and awaaaaaaaaay I went.
This is the second Star on the bench, and this second one started working perfectly, right out of the Gate.
It came with a neat homemade heater/plate, aluminum with a partially disassembled travel Iron with thermostat...and it works slick :)

Loaded 30-30 while quarantined today. 10 rounds with 28 grains of 748 and 10 rounds with 29 grains, all under an NOE 311165gr hollow point, Carnuba Blue lube, and a home made gas check. Then 100 more with 7.5 grains of Red Dot and Accurate 31-157R plain base boolit. Annealed some brass. Of course it didn’t go smoothly. Haven’t used it in awhile and the tip didn’t work. Somehow I had a second one, installed it but had some issues w/ flame length varying. This effected the process and I know I overheated quite a few cases. Between the trimmer issues and this I’ve ruined about 100 cases. So I ordered 2,000 from Jeff Bartlett.

The other night I decided I needed to get back in the loading so I grabbed a random rifle ........figures I'd grab the Prima Donna . This is a special order rifle , an 06' with an 8.5" twist , Savage 1965 so likely not as odd as it seems at first glance .
Prima likes weigh lotted brass . My Dad passed a couple of yr ago and I was given all of his stuff and among it was his RC , dies , powder etc . I went through it to put it up and mounted his RC next to mine . At some point I must have "borrowed" the TW52 brass decapped and reamed it . Anyway I set out to weigh lot it and found it much better than the LC43 .
Naturally it wouldn't chamber in Prima , I must have used the Universal decapper .
I looked for the 06' dies and came to Dad's Herters FL set first and figured they probably needed to be set up anyway .... I screwed the die in and it stopped as is just scuffing the shell holder .....good as any place to start , it was almost like that's the last place they were screwed in . It was Dad's press after all , that may have improved the odds . Sure enough ran the first case and it was sized perfect for the fire form .... You know for just a moment it was almost like .......

This morning I beat my brains out trying to figure out why my 20yr old Hornady L-N-L PM suddenly started to drop widely varying charges of Titegroup.
I pulled 150 loaded rds of suspect .44Mag Cowboy Ammo out of rotation and dumped them in an Old mayo jar to break down later.

Finally figured it was a loose clamp screw on the upper clamp of the L-N-L Powder Drop.
Tightened all screws and the PM - PD settled down and started to drop accurate Powder charges again.
Six screws and one loosens slightly and it all goes to Blazes.

The reloading room was spread out today. Much in the recliner watching SEC games. Was proud that the Razorbacks looked much better this year in their loss to Georgia. Anyway, deprimed 290 rounds of 300 BO and 320 rounds of 223. Washed and dried them all. Put into an ammo box nose down to make sure no tumbling pins were in the primer holes.

I did try something different after I got the pins out and rinsed the brass I spayed some Meguiar's hybrid ceramic wax on it, worked it around and rinsed. It doesn't have that squeaky clean feel now. It almost feels like it's dry lubed. Kinda is I hope. Don't know when I'll get around to loading it. Probably at least a couple of weeks.

This weekend finally getting around to working on the $100 Rem 700 25-06 rifle I acquired. It was in pretty bad shape looks like it had been a muzzle in the floor board ranch gun. I cut off the damaged muzzle and using the lathe put an 11deg crown on it; replaced the busted trigger guard with the Magpul 700L trigger guard and magazine; pillar and bedded the action into the replacement stock, mounted and bore sighted the new scope. It will be going for cerakote once I get done blue printing the action. Didn't have any 25-06 brass but have plenty of 270, so turned 100 cases of 270 into 25-06. Then loaded some ladder loads of IMR4831 over a 117gr Hornday BTSP. Haven't ordered a 25-06 bullet mold yet but the itch to cast for rifle is getting stronger.

Put together an AR pistol in 223 last week and ran some cast through it. Ill be dipped if it didn't keyhole and fail to chamber caused by all the unburnt powder in turn caused by the pistol length gas system(its a 7.5in barrel). 15.5 grains of W748 work well in the standard 16in carbine gas systems of my other AR's. Tried again today and still looked like a shotgun pattern at 25 yards. Bought a 20 round pack of J words and it stacked them neatly. Figured more speed would do it, so went home and loaded 35 rounds with 20grains of W748(because the Dillon had 35 primers in it) and voila, same good group as the JWords, all in an inch or so at 25 yards from standing with a cheap non magnified red dot. Im happy with this plinker. It might be my new truck gun.

I finished the Lyman Salt Bath pot today. Was stopped by hurricane Laura when the power went out for 55 hrs. Here and about 9 days in the rest of the parish. Helping others with portable generators keep their freezers froze.

The 40 year old Lyman pot with the (PID) controller melted the low temp. Salt and went to 960’ F. Slipped 80-30/06 cases in for 7 seconds then into a bucket of distilled water. They look good with some color change to the shoulder. Rinsed 2 more times with water to be sure salt is gone, started drying.

Will load these this week and report if I’ve stopped from splitting necks.

Yesterday I converted 100 military 9mm Luger cases to 9x18 Makarov brass. Those commie guns are hard on brass, and they sling empties into the next county. It was a pretty simple process of expanding the case mouths with a 9x18 expander die, then trimming with the Lee 9x18 Mak case length gauge and trimmer. Also swaged the primer pockets on these cases. Not sure that was necessary, but they all primed just fine this morning. Pretty tedious process of trimming, chamfering and deburring. The process went a lot faster with the drill press.

Loaded up 50 of those cases today with the Lee 95 grain round nose over unique. I'm mostly interested to see how the cases turn out, but that has always been a good Mak load for me.

I loaded up 40 Legends. 20 with my 270g Cast PCd bullet as a SUB with Herco.

20 more with the new Saeco 245g bullet again over Herco. But this wasnt intended as a sub.

Shot them the new 270 wasnt as good as 7.3g. And the Saeco Bullet/Load was MUCH more accurate!! Guestimated @ 1350 fps.

I've got a CZ52 - it has what I call a "powerful extractor". It'll send brass 30+ feet away.

Yes, the CZ52 is bad about it too. I've always had a hard time getting seating depth correct on that cartridge so that it will feed reliable. I must be doing something wrong. It's a blast to shoot though.

I shot my newly formed 9x18 Mak cases today. They were loaded with the 95 grain Lee round nose over 4 grains of unique. I shot them out of an IJ70 which is the civilian version of the Makarov pistol. This is always a good load for me in the Mak. All of the rounds fired fine, and the cases formed nicely. Here is where it gets strange. I measured the lengths of the cases when I got home from the range. Every case was between .003-.007 shorter than they were when I loaded them.

Any ideas on how that happened?

Edit: I actually found all of my cases too. That's a first.

I'ma gonna guess that you chamfered them to a slight bevel edge, and the case mouth headspacing of your pistol prolly just made that edge a bit flatter.

I actually have two barrels for that gun. I had an OLD barrel (probably original) and it was pitted, etc. It was still accurate, but I bought a new barrel a while back. So, I keep that old barrel and plunk each one before it goes in the box. If it doesn't plunk, I try to reseat/crimp a little more until it does.
