Are texans any good ?

Went to a gun show on the weekend and bought a Texan GT 12g press for $60. I herd they don'nt make them anymore ~ but it looked good to me so I bought it. It looks complete and works ok. Anyone have one ~ any thing to look out for, tips and etc Thanks;

I do not have one BUT my local Gunshop owner does and happily loads 500 rounds a week for skeet or trap. It is his dad's machine and has been in use for at least 25 years & possible much longer. I got out of the Army in 74 and it seams there was always that machine bolted to the old table as you walk into the gunshop in Georgetown, Illinois.

I sold my 2 off years ago because I wanted a part and none were to be had ( lord help you if you need parts )

From memory MEC bushings will work and MEC bars ( from memory ) either will work or can be altered to work

I have one I that was given to me. It has worked alright for me. I mostly load slugs on it. The fingers that feed the wad into the hull can be a pain to adjust. Mine perferes to have the crimp starter double pumped. The mec universal charge bars work on mine. Overall it is a decent machine especially for free.

Thanks for the replys guys ~ it's good to know that MEC charge bars and bush's fit, I have friends that have parts for them. It's also good to here from those talkin' Texans.

I have an old one which is almost as old as me I think. It works ok, I haven't loaded a lot on it because factory shotshells are about as cheap as reloaded ones. I have go back into it because I am getting interested in Black Powder and you can't buy BP loads in Australia, except from guys who belong to clubs and reload.

I only got two pair of bushes with mine. The larger of the two drops a good hunting load so I left it at that.

There is a guy who has a site who specialises in Texans, I can't remember what it is called. I don't know if they are any better or worse than other machines.

Be careful loading up the primer tube. I reloaded mine last week with Winchesters and they went off, wrecking the tube, cutting my hand and finger on the other hand badly and giving me a good thump in the gooleys. I'd be watching my technique and not holding the tube vertcally so that the primers slide in not drop. I will be placing the primers on the plate one at a time now that the tube is trashed.

If you were about to buy one, I'd advise to get a press from a company still in business, but seeing's how you already got it, it will be ok.

When I say the thread caption: "Are Texans Any Good?" my first response was to tell you that is something you need to ask my wife!

But you are talking about shotshell reloaders. The Texan brand was made by Soverign Instrument in Dallas for quite some time and was a popular and quality machine.

I had one back in the early 60's and it did just fine. Now as to parts, you are on your own. Being a lathe owner, I would not let that throw me as I could make about anything I wanted. Powder and shot bushings would be a snap. The factory powder bushing was made from aluminium.

Most Texans are pretty tough and gamey, unless you harvest one underage. If you smoke them 12-14 hours though, they can be pretty toothsome.

At the risk of sounding like I'm trying to hi-jack the thread, How have you found the Lee shotshell press? Probably wouldn't cost much more than a MEC charge bar for the Texan.

And God help anyone who messes with you folks from down under. We, Texas and America , would be down there in a flash.

I meet a number of folks from Australia here in Texas--either temporarily dispatched here for their job, or on "holiday" as they put it. There truly is a kindred spirit between our state and your country. We're both fiercely independent, full of pride, and unhesitatingly friendly and welcoming. . . . until we're given reason to be otherwise.

I made it to Australia on two occasions many years ago while in the military. The ONLY other two countries I ever felt as welcome were Denmark and Holland.

My wife has never been to Australia, so I'm thinking it will make for a fine wedding anniversary trip in the next couple of years.
