How much does a pound of linotype weigh?

    Just kidding.

What I really want to know is how much a linotype pig weighs. Specifically, the long narrow ingots with the holes on each end for hanging them in the melt.

I'm on the scent to possibly pick up +/- 30 of these if the price is right. My fingers are crossed.

Surprisingly enough a pound of linotype and a pound of feathers both weigh the same ammount. 7000 grains.

I had a bunch of lino pigs that I sold. Most of them were in the 21 to 22 pound range.

The pigs that I had did NOT have "holes at both ends", as you describe them. They had a semi-closed opening at ONE end, which is how they hang them from the back of the lino machine. The other end was somewhat pointed, and had no hanging provision. Also, the cross section was somewhat triangular.

If you're looking at some sort of pigs that are not like what I am describing, then they might not be actual lino, but some home made look alike, which could be watered down with some other composition of lead. Some print shops occasionally cleaned out the drawers of lined type, and melted them down, and poured them into their own molds. Those molds are shaped like the pic below, with the obvious strata lines from small amounts being melted and successively added to the mold. Those are the pigs where the potential exists for other stuff to get mixed in with the lead. See the end of this post for a picture of what a pig from the foundry look like. (I have to get my camera out and working....)

    Questionable alloy "pig"

    How they hang them:

How much does a hen weigh?
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

HMMMMMMM? This question runs in the same forum as which weighs more a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks??? A Henway that is U.S. made should go about 3 lb. if unpainted.Robert

Most pigs I have seen go between 22-26 lbs. My dad was a linotype operator, and I poured pigs in his print shop when I was a kid. I going this afternoon to pick up 50 or so from an old shop in the boonies.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, I haven't seen the pigs yet. I didn't realize that there were different types so that is some helpful info.

    Thanks again!

I'm looking at 11 pigs that have an other shape, but the same hanger attachment area.
They weigh from 22.4-24.8# I got them from a local print shop that closed over 20 yr ago. At the time I didn't think i had any use for the molds.
    isn't hindsight great?

According to our old newspaper editor they came in 20 and 40 pound nominal weights. I got about 10 40 pounders from him years ago and had a heck of a time cutting them up.

I've got 150 lbs in 2 lb ingots and in cut up type set. I'm planning on using this for my .44 bullets in my Lee pot. I use my wheel weights in my Waage pot so I won't get them mixed up.

That should give me 4375 44mag bullets before I have to do anything else.
