That looks like the bucket of 1200 .308 win that I am prepping.
I bought 1000 147 fMJ bt bullets to get me started.
If you've got access to a reasonably accurate scale, you might try counting by weight. I count boolits that way all the time and usually get a number within 1%.

Case weights are easy to find on the web. Should get you pretty close.
Weigh a pound of them, then weigh the bucketful.
Subtract the weight of the empty bucket.
If you can't figure it out from here, there is no helping you.
Now you are going to ask, how many in a pound.
Looks like a buttload.
Best get a buttload of bullets.

My guess is 1732.
I have picked up and stored a lot of brass in the wooden cases two fifty cal ammo cans come in; '06 was before my time, but I have done a lot of 7.62, 5.56 9mm and .45ACP. A stacked bucket of .50 BMG doesn't really hold very many.

The more scientific approach.
Bucket
Full bucket 42.0 lbs on bathroom scale
Empty bucket 1.7255 lbs on kitchen scale
Bucket net weight 40.2745 lbs of brass
Brass
2.87 lbs/100 on kitchen scale
Result
1403 pieces
A completely full bucket would likely contain 1500 pieces.
It is fun to do stuff like this, seeing who's wild guess is closest.
Hope everyone had fun.
Now I need to find 1500 bullets best suited to M1 Garand.
I pulled a bunch of 147 gr bullets from corroded brass after Hurricane Irene. Some were pretty hard to inertia out but they all eventually broke free. Shot pretty good in my 1903s. Found some pull downs on line for $120.00/500.
