Thanks,
I put the GC on after PCing, any issues with that?
Thanks,
After for me. Keeps the sizing die cleaner - no issues getting GC on. I used a small hammer when need to tap them on. The only time I had any problems (more hammer work needed) was for 224 GC’s on some cast Lee’s.
Both...
Not all bullet shanks are equal. Some tight ones need GC first. Others can benifit from the thickness.
I have learned what powders are better for a GC bullet.

That is what I’ve been doing. Just wondered after seeing many pictures. I took your hint of a tap before the sizer die.
I’m just curious what everyone does.
I’m still new at PCing. I use a blue and the boolits it’s are looking better now than what my first batch looked like.
I dont feel either way is wrong. As long as your checks are properly fit.
But as you progress you will learn PC negates the need of a GC for most all handguns and good portion of rifles not pushed hard.

Does a check add anything to a coated bullet; assuming same bullet, one with and one without a shank for a check? I’ve assumed the purpose of both the check and powder coating was to eliminate leading at higher velocities.

For a properly sized plain base bullet, if the mold produces a clean, uniform base, a gas check does not add anything. The properly sized bullet is sealing the gases in the barrel and you aren't cutting the lead with the burning gases.
For a bullet made for a gas check, if the cutout for the GC isn't uniform, you may have some accuracy issues. At handgun ranges, I doubt you'll notice. At 100+ yards with a rifle, it may be noticable.
I put them on after PCing. Reduces the chance of getting something on the boolit that could cause a problem PCing and sizes everything together.
Hello to all.
I prefer before so I can pc also them...
Ciao

after, but that is the way I do it
Hit em'hard
hit em'often
After, did run into some issues trying to resize and GC .003-004" in, but keeping the sizing die clean and applying a dash of case lube on the unsized casts seems to do the trick.
I’m super new to casting (first post here) but last night I was sizing some 25 caliber GC boolits in a NOE size die for a Lee APP. It was my very first GC experience and those lil guys are difficult for my old arthritic fingers LOL
The GCs all stayed on the lead bullets with no issues but I had a few bullets that I decided to spray some aerosol moly. Sorry if this is not an ethical approach to coating and may be the reason but the GCs would not stay on the moly coated bullet. Made me wonder about PC bullets which I was considering.
I prefer to PC over the gc if the shank fit allows it. No metal on metal that way, so no copper fouling in the grooves. I tend to run my cast pc gc bullets pretty hard though.
I put gaschecks on AFTER powder coat so the boolit and gas check get sized together.
I do both because I double PC rifle bullets. I do a partial cure PC, the install the check on a non-PC clean shank, size, full cure PC and size.
It looks like this: Gas check shank kept clean by inserting into holes drilled & reamed in a sheetmetal pan. Then check applied and final PC, bonding check to bullet.
I put it on after and I can say it shoots fine but if you load any wrong the GC will not pull with the kinetic puller. I did some 30-30 naked and lubed and some powdercoated. The naked lubed where off at 100 but the powder still holds true. Now I got a bunch of plinking or short range hunting rounds.
