Good evening, not much info on here for 240 gr boolits coming out of a 41 mag. Anybody have some info for them behind 231, 2400, 296, or green dot?

for 296 ---I would use 18 gr 296 and see where I am
Thanks for the replies. I'm assuming the 296 data is with magnum primers? Any idea on velocity of the 231 loads?
I also just found where I hid the electronic copy of the #44 lyman manual on my computer. It listed 14-17.5 gr of 2400 for a 240 gr swc.
Target loads for 231 would run between 6-8 grains...7.5 should give you in the 1000 fps area from a 4" barrel.
296...my best loads for 296/H110 (same powder different cans), is to fill the case till the bottom of the bullet just rests on top of the powder. Measure that load, back off 2 grains and then work back up to the rests on top of the powder load in 1/2 grain increments. Have found that load to be the best in accuracy, standard deviation, and lowest spread. Since all bullets have a different length from the crimp groove to the base, the amount of powder can vary even with bullets of the same weight.
I have a couple of 250-265 grain bullets that run with 20-22 grains of H110 and chrono at 1375-1450 fps from a 6" barrel.

Well I've got some info so now I'll just need to load some up and see how they do. My boolits are 243gr sized and powder coated to .410. They fit through the chambers easily enough but my bore slugs .410 as well. If these do good I'll leave well enough alone, otherwise I'll have to have the throats opened up a little so I can go up to a .411 boolit.
I'd like to work up a 296 load but find myself lacking magnum primers so I'll have to see what I can do with the other powders. Just wish I could find some more 2400.
Oh and this is for the 6 1/2' Blackhawk from the other thread.
Looking to load some 41 specials. I know somewhere buried deep in this thread there was talk about bullet seating or crimping dies. Something about the dies being to long for the special cartridge. So what are you guys using for that?

You shouldn't have too much problem loading. 41 Special with Magnum dies. The only one I know of that won't are RCBS dies. I have Lee and Lyman and they work fine.
Good morning, new member here,
I want to use my Redhawk for bullseye shooting. I have been looking for loads using a 215 gr Hi-Tek SWC bb resulting in velocities well below 900 fps.
Lee Modern Reloading has data for 215gr lead bullets and Clays: min 4.0 gr (825 fps) - max 5.2 gr (979 fps).
I never used this powder. Can I safely explore the 3.5 - 4.0 gr range?
I came across several posts on various forums from shooters using HP-38/W231 with 210-220 gr lead bullets in the 6 gr-8 gr range, with one chrono (6.5 gr, 932 fps).
Looking for further information about that, I stumbled upon a website (http://www.gmdr.com/lever/41rm215_dat.htm) with an interesting piece of data:
The 4.0 gr load may be exactly what I am looking for, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.
Has anyone here tested something like that? Does it make sense and seems reliable and safe?
Would you have another suggestion with what I have at home? Powders on hand are N310, HP-38, Clays, 2400 and N32C and the bullets are Brazos 215gr SWC bb.
Thank you for your advice.
Welcome aboard...
It doesn't say what gun or barrel length is being used in that data but I can tell you from shooting quite a bit of 231 in the .41 Magnum that 7.0 grains will run in the 900 fps range from a 4" Model 57 with a 210 grain bullet.
How long is your Redhawk barrel...2.75", 4.2", 5.5" or 7.5"?
Since you are looking for a minimum load, I would start at 7.0 and work down and see how the accuracy and consistency is...would also be good to have a chronograph...
RJ, is that 300 gr bullet designed for the .405 Winchester? What kind of velocity can you get from a 7½" tube?
Nice bullet, Bob.........
One could use the bullet for .405, I have not yet, but it was designed as a handgun bullet...
19 grains of H110 runs the round at 1267 from a FA Model 654 6"...
That'll get it done!
Was shooting with CWlongshot two weeks ago and one of the loads he had made up for his .45 Colt Bisley was a 305 grain cast with 6.0 grains of Unique... It was very pleasant to shoot..and ran in the 620 fps area from a 7.5" barrel....675 from a 10" Contender.
So it got me to thinking that I would do something like that with the .41... Without changing the powder bar in the Dillon 550 it will get down to 6.1 grains of Unique... So I made up 10 rounds each of 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0 with the 300s. Plan on running them out of a 6.5" Blackhawk and a 4" S&W.
Also have a 265 grain MP TruShot clone that I made up with 8.0 grains of Unique and the Accurate Molds 41-250F with the same weight. From a previous chronograph session the 250F ran 1015 from a 4" 57 and 1075 from a FA 6" 654...
Bob
I use a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die and crimp heavy on all my loads be it .500 JRH or .38 Special.
Well not everything went as planned...
Turned out I had sized the 300s .413 for shooting out of a .405 Winchester...they would not seat in any of the revolvers I tried except amazingly enough a Freedom Arms 83 with a 4.75" barrel... They had to be pressed in but they did fit and function...
300 grain Mountain Mold
Unique Powder
CCI LP Primers
6.1 grains: 865 fps
7.0 grains: 921 fps
8.0 grains: 1022 fps
No pressure signs at all..cases dropped right out and apparently expanded enough as there was no blacking of the shells.
MP Molds 265 grain TruShot Clone solid sized .410"
CCI LP Primer
8.0 grains of Unique
FA 83 4.75": 1014 fps
S&W Model 58 4": 970 fps
Ruger BH 6.5": 1024 fps
Accura Molds 41-250F sized .410"
CCI LP Primers
8.0 grains of Unique
FA 83 4.75": 1034 fps
S&W Model 58 4": 965 fps
Ruger BH 6.5": 1050 fps
Since 8.0 grains of Unique ran the 300s, 265s and 250s out of the FA 4.75" barrel all about the same velocity I would guess that the 300s from the S&W 58 and Ruger BH would be in the same area...
Just bought a new barrel for the Contender Carbine. It's a SSK .41mag barrel 18" long with the taper
of the factory barrel. I ordered it through Haus of Arms and it took a while (custom made) but I sure
am happy. Mounted a scope tonight and hopefully it will warm up so I can get some range time with
my favorite load of 215gr RCBS Keith style over 8gr Universal. That load shoots 1 hole groups in my 57's.
