Lee liquid Alox ??

I decided to take out some of the old stuff and will start with the 6.5x53.5R Daudeteau built on a M-71 Mauser action This action is 145 years old so I do respect it's age. Hence, I generally short cast lead bullets in the old guns. I went to reload last night and found that I still had about 100 175 grain, .271" cast bullets with gas checks that I got from somewhere but they were un-lubed and I'm not set up to lube 6.5 bullets so I decided for the very first time to use the Lee Liquid Alox bullet lube. Gotta tell you, I liked the ease of application but I am concerned about the performance of the Liquid alox. I'm not pushing the bullets very fast, only used about 12 grains of Unique at about 1480 FPS, just punching paper. So, with all that said, what has been your experience with the Lee Liquid Alox as a bullet lube? Thanks, Steve

I'm not set up with a lubersizer so I tumble lube all of my cast in paste wax/Lee alox - both pistol and rifle. I don't push them to the limit but I have always had good results with the alox. Like Brillcream . . . "a little dab will do ya".

I've used BLL with with Alox in it on unlubed and old lubed cast boolits. It works great. Your barrel will sparkle after shooting BLL boolits I don't hot rod but if you search BLL here you will find a world of info, some pretty hot, and straight Alox also.

it will work fine at that speed ,my 308 gc boolits are doing 1800fps without problem with LLA .

I havent had much luck with tumble lubes above 38 Special pressures and speeds. It does appear i am the odd ball out though from other reports. I say give it a whirl and see what happens.

I have never run staight alox. But, I have shot a lot a Lyman 311291’s tumbled with 45/45/10 (alox/Johnson’s paste wax/paint thinner, by volume) out of my 30-06. I use either 12gr of unique, 13gr of Herco, or 16gr of 2400. All have shot well with no leading.

I tumble lube all my cast bullets with LLA (16 calibres)

I lube before gas checking and sizing and again afterwards with undiluted LLA.

I push some loads around 2000fps and get zero leading.

Use two styles of lube for cast, one appropriate for BP and the other is LLA. I dilute it about 10% by volume with mineral spirits and dip the shank/lube grooves in a small container, let it dry and move on. Size before or after, I see no difference in performance. Velocities range from subsonic to the neighborhood of 2,500 fps.

They do well with Alox

I use LLA to lube my 6.5x55se boolits. I got tired of them always falling over in the oven when using PC. I tumble lube, let dry and then size and apply gas checks and then tumble a second time. Works well for me. I haven’t been shooting that caliber recently, but next time I plan to try adding Johnson’s Paste wax to keep the stickiness down.

Dust them with motor mica or graphite, say goodbye to sticky.

1. Accuracy was UGLY. Only 50 yards but still UGLY!!
2. Cast lead Bullets were already starting to tumble...UGLY!!
3. The bore leaded really really bad...UGLY!!
4. The chamber on this rifle has a lot of tool marks and two of the six cases separated...UGLY!! I'm fairly bright so I stopped after the full case separation and inspection of the other fired cases. The cases were/are resized 7.62 Russian but were previously fired. I'll try new cases next time and I do have a set of CH4D reloading dies for this caliber so working up a load is a little easier. I have much work to do with this rifle...FUN!!

larger boolit diameter and a bit more speed and you will be sorted

I've used the Alox on a bunch of .358 diameter, 158 grain lead, round nose, shooting in both .38 special and .357. Pistols and lever action rifles. Never experienced any leading in the bore or any other issues.

Don’t know why you got the case head separation but, sounds like you may need a larger diameter boolit. You have an interesting project. Keep us posted.

And Steven, you likely have excess headspace in that gun. Take a 1x fired case and neck size it with your die... lf you can, measure where the shoulder is compared to a resized case. I would bet the sizing die pushes the shoulder and hence needs to be backed off. Just my guess and I've been wrong before.., good luck

I've used LLA on unsized bullets in the .35 Whelen with pretty good results up to 2200fps. No leading and accuracy was good enough for deer and black bear.

Been using LLA (aka mule snot) for many years and go through about two tubes a year. It is just so simple and easy to use. Every time I consider trying something new, I acquire cheaply or am gifted more tubes. As for your tumbling boolits at 50 yards, I had a similar experience with my 338 WM. The rifle would not stabile the Lee RNGC 220 gr. boolit at anything under 1650 MV but was accurate to 700 yards at 1800 fps MV. When I tried a semi-pointed 235 gr boolit with Loverin grooves, the boolits were stable at 1500 fps.
