Want to build a heavier press

I want to build a heavier duty press for sizing down and belting brass.

I have searched and found two similar, but want to know what you would build?

The old Rockchucker is maxed out, need a bigger press.

I have the machines to build one, but need a simple strong suggestion for a press.

    Thanks,
    No BS

I would suggest going to the swaging forum and looking at the plans for ANEATS press (I believe that is who is responsible for it, sorry if it is not). I believe it is a sticky on the swaging subforum. ...more beefy then that press and you may want to look into som industrial hydraulic presses lol.

    444H or the Rock Crusher?

I made a 3 position press bases on the 444H years ago. Been thru a couple of modifications.

Had not thought about a heavier version.

I found his PDF plans, Thanks

I prefer a manual press. Things happen a little slower than with a hydraulic model.

Well if you do let us know. I have some 3/4" threaded rod, about 8 nuts 4 heavy flat washers and two locknuts. The threaded rod is about 12" long. You could use the threaded rod as the legs your press stands on. Pretty sure the threaded rod is B7 so pretty hard.
Figure one inch for the anchor, so now you have about 11 inches of room.Factor in what the die station is So you loose about 1 -1.5" 1.5 inches. The die station or plate has to be way over built as it takes all the stresses. Remember alignment is paramount. Saw a set of video's on the net recently and instead of useueing any type of ball brearings he used bronze impregnated oilite type bushings. And something else, he used all steel for accuracy and weight. If you're burning to go DIY you can learn a lot by looking at different designs.

If you just want a massively strong press buy a Redding UltraMag.

I believe your most difficult problem will be dies that can take the extreme pressure of swaging solid brass case heads and belts.

Bullet swaging presses like Corbins, et al, are made to form lead core bullets that are MUCH more malleable than solid case heads.

Build a cage from 1" x 3" steel bar stock and put a 30 ton bottle jack in it and press the brass into the die . Turn the die over and press the brass back out. You are probably going to have to make your own dies as I don't think anyone makes dies that would stand that kind of pressure.

Just curious but why would you want to put a belt on brass. Most folks would rather they weren't there.

I have a 41-240x2.170" 'pistol'......[I have plenty of 240 brass] but I wnted to try to make some out of 06 brass. That worked well with homemade dies. Then I found that mauser brass didn't need neck reaming.....even better.

Then I wanted to make a 405 for a bolt action. Sako 366 brass was chosen for its's length....thin neck. Now I use Quality Cartridge 400 Whelen brass. [thicker neck].

That let with a suggestion to turn the belt off Mag brass and re-belt into a Belted Whelen cast..........works great!

Then turned the new belt off and sized down to .453......now I can make a belted .405 that is 2.900".............2.850 and a 300 TSX will max out the length of a magazine.

Amazing how one thing leads to so many, kind of like guns that multiply!
