Hit em'hard
hit em'often
oh ya, before deer season im like, im taking the 44 revolver, no im taking the 44 rifle, or maybe the bolt gun with a scope incase I need a scope. also with about 3 different loads for each I decide im using, then deer season comes and I don't see a deer anyway. then repeat next year.
Every time I go hunting. I have ten to pick from for deer not counting handguns or blackpowder.

All year in prep for season....all year.
Do I want to take the 06? Do I work up a new cast load for it or stick with what I have worked up? What about that new 300 blk cast load I want to try...
Then I start strategic planning.."ok I'll get meat for the table with the trusted loads, try what I'm confident in but haven't hunted with yet, then finish up my tags with the new new stuff I'm itching to try (powder coat load, paper patch load, different load)"
I hunt in heavily populated (deer populated) very close range...I'll 100% fill my tags...so it comes down to what I want to use to harvest. Mostly conservation of the herd (can't eat antlers)
The struggle is real...too many good options

When younger say 15, I would take 12guage autagetem and 30-30. 12 for running like with dog hunting, 30-30 for longer shots.
I'll usually narrow it down to two or three. I'll hunt with one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Sometimes I just take whatever tickles my fancy at the moment.
Some people live and learn but I mostly just live
Surely
But for dove hunting I have a remedy, I take a different gun every time I go.
For ducks and doves, I may use a steel shot capable gun more than once
That way they do not get jealous!

Every time.
Nope ! Only been a handful of times 4 I think since I was 12 yrs old that my ever faithful little deer killer model 600 in 35 Rem hasn't been with me in the woods , it's never let me down and is just perfect for how and we're I hunt . Me and that ole rifle logged a lot of miles and killed a pile of deer over the years . For small game it's similar my paps old win model 12 20 ga. It's just tradition . Brings back lots of good memories toting those old family guns .
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
Skeetx- no love for the 28 and .410? Surely you have some nice ones. I envy all that hunting with those classics!

It just depends on how I'm feeling at the start of the season. I generally hunt with the same gun all season. Caliber and cartridge are really irrelevant in my area. Thick woods and rocky hills limit the potential range of your shots, so there's no advantage to using a long range shoulder buster vs something like a 44 mag or 30-30. The deer aren't monsters and can be cleanly taken with a .223 and the right bullet.
I'm probably going to take my Husky in 9.3x57 Mauser this year. I almost ALWAYS take a 6" S&W 629 in 44 mag with me. Mainly for protection, though I will use it without hesitation for taking a deer if the opportunity presents itself.

Hunting or just going to the range I can’t decide which firarms to take, once that’s done the next issue is which loads to take. Should thin the herd but I can not do it, like a junkie looking for next fix
TBG, well up here on the North end of the State, the cold front drives the
doves away quickly, so you have to hunt hard and often in Sept.
Here is the year before.

The gun is dictated by where I will be hunting. I use the one that is best suited to the most likely shot.

I have one rifle that always makes the trip 1898 Springfield 30-40 Krag been making the trip sence 1971. the other is up for debate depends on where I am going.
For me it is what ever I am in the mood for unless it is just a season for one thing only like early muzzle load season. All other seasons for firearms the mood.
