Have the set and have removed and replaced several barrels. I use the oak blocks to hold the barrel however i struggle with holding them with no slip and wonder what others use for the metal/blue protector in the barrel vice?

I use heavy paper like old benchrest targets or card paper for business cards.
Make sure the blocks fit evenly and clamp well enough to crush the oak and use powdered sugar liberally. Works fine for me.
Also wipe the metal and wood down with acetone to remove any oil or wax coating.
Powdered sugar ... ill try it. Thanks for the hint
I use powdered rosin.
Some people live and learn but I mostly just live
My vise is made from 2" X 2 1/2" Bar stock the jaws are bored aluminum split blocks. I coat these with powdered rosin for added grip. Bolts are 3/4" NF thread. Really clamps up tight. Ive tried the wood blocks and didn't really like them. I have a set of steel blocks that can have a lead sleeved pored in them. The poured lead insert is roughly .180 thick ( depends on barrel) and with a little rosin they are very good.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
