I need some advice on the 270

A person told me that the 270 Winchester will not shoot cast boolits. I think this is nonsense but would like to hear from you folks on the subject.

what boolit mould do you use for the 270? I've been thinking about trying it. Just wanting to collect some info before trying.Gas checks or not?

Not your question I know but pardon the highjack. just this week took my A-bolt Browning .270 w/20" barrel out with some shotgun slugs I was testing. Had some Nosler ballistic tip 130 gr bullets loaded that Came with some other stuff I bought. Set up target @ 300 yds and fired 3. Now this may not impress some folks but better than I have ever done - 1 1/2" group. My best was 3" and that's not every day. But group was 8" down and 8" right. Remembered that I had not done anything but bore sight since I put on a new Nikon scope! A 3 x 9 Buckmaster w/BDC reticles. Got caught in thunderstorm when I had gone last month to sight it in and just forgot, so luckey that I hit paper. I used the first circle under the crosshair as I usually zero @ 200. Adjusted scope and did it again Point of all this, those bullets amazed me and you may want to give them a try. 48 gr IMR 4064 in FC brass, .320 oal. Then shot 4" group at 400 with a mostly quartering/left 10-12 mph wind. Sorry avout the hijack but thought this may be worth sharing.

I always had good accuracy with the Nosler Ballistic Tip in my Ruger 77 in .270, but can no longer hunt with them due to Kalifornia's INSANE Lead Ban ..... My pet load IIRC was 54.0 grains of IMR-4350 with Winchester LR Primers. I hope the cast thing is nonsense because I just bought an RCBS 150 Grain Mould .....

CD I don't have a 270.
the last thing I need is a 270.
but if I had one and wanted to shoot lead in it the rcbs mold would be a good one, with about 24grs of 4895 in the case with a little Dacron to hold it all in place.
that load done well in the 7mm version with either the 145 or 168gr mold.

The now make a lead free version of the Nosler BT. I like my 270. Old Savage 110. Shoots sub MOA every day if I do my part.

aspangler, I just looked at Nosler's website. The Lead-Free Ballistic Tip is a Varmint Bullet that completely comes apart at impact. Thanx for making me look though ........

Got 4 of those 270 Winchester rifles and the first one I got in 1965, it is a pre-64 as there were still a few on the shelves. It loves Hornady 140 SPBT’s and a hefty charge of the ol’ standby H-4831—‘nuff said on that as this is a cast boolit site…

About 15 years ago, I won a Model 700 in the 270 Winchester caliber. It set in my gun safe for a year or so until I decided to try this cast boolit stuff. Long story short, it has shot nothing but cast and it loves the Lyman 280642 (~150 grains) and 20 grains of 5744. Velocity is only at an average of 1667 fps and it is a shooter. Groundhog sized steel is dead out to 250 yards and sometimes at 300 yards—holdovers are critical of course…

I have also taken the Lyman 287346, originally purchased for my 7-30 Waters, (sized down to 0.278”) with the same 20 grain charge of 5744 for an average velocity of 1810 fps. The accuracy is good, but not as good as the 280642…

Both of these boolits also shoot quite well with Trail Boss; velocity is in the 1200-1300 fps range…

Another boolit I tried is the NOE 279-124-FP. This is a boolit that was designed for the 6.8mm SPC cartridge—a 0.277 caliber also. I tried it in the Model 700 with the same 20 grain charge of 5744 and it shot quite well also at an average of 1714 fps. I really have not messed with this boolit that much in the 270 Winchester cartridge…

Now then, speaking of the 6.8mm SPC, if you are wanting to work with the 0.277” caliber, this might be another option. The NOE boolit is the one I use with 10x, AA2200, WC-860 (fill the case right up!!!), and IMR-7383 (I finally found a use for it!). That is the powder I use as the “go to” for this cartridge in the 23” Contender carbine at ~1642 fps. I have a Burris 'scope on the T/C and it has good holdover marks. With a good rest, it is quite easy to hit the steel groundhog at 300 yards--with good consistency. It will out-shoot the 278642 in the Model 700…

Anyhow, that is my 270 Winchester experience—it’s been good for me. Especially the ol’ Model 70 as it harvested a good many deer until I sort of put it away a dozen years ago…

I don't think there is or was any gun made that won't shoot cast. Might have to think different is all. Now choosing a boolit will present a challenge but not insurmountable with our friends here. Go for it. Without those silver things there would be no life and too many Vampires!

I have an Encore in 308 Winchester and I have put too much time and money into it. It took me considerable time to figure that out, but I finally surrendered…

Much advice can and will be given by those who do know what they are talking about, but that advice comes with a price—new molds, different lubes, different sizing dies, different powders, different primers, etc. The combinations become many and many…

Not trying to hijack the thread with off-topic discussions, but sometimes one simply must accept the facts…

I've got an old ideal 280412 that casts a 134gr RN. Haven't tried it in my 270 15" Encore yet but planning to. It shoots pretty good in my 6.8 AR upper.

I don't know what sort of performance you are after with cast bullets but the 270 case will hold about 21 grains of Trailboss and about 19.5 gr will get you somewhere near 1500 fps.

You all do realize I WILL blame you for my expenditures for supplies for the cast 270!!! Oh heck I still have a few boxes of jacketed to use up first, then I can justify it.
let me see: mould; more lead; sizing die;powder;got primers already; oh and more propane; and another lube; those little funny metal thing for the boolit base and ect and ect. I think I hear the wife digging out the iron skillet so I best stop here.
