Which pistol do you have, generally you want your bullets sized to your chamber mouth diameter. I have a Ruger SRH and size .452. If your chamber mouths are .455+ I'd be calling the manufacturer for a new cylinder your chamber mouths are way to big.
The pistol is a super Blackhawk.
While not a 454 my 45 Colt cylinders measure .455. I size at .455 and have no problems. How are you measuring the throats on your gun?
I Have a friend that has been a machinist for 30+ years he measured with an inside micrometer and double checked with pin gauges. Which mold do you use that drops big enough to size to .455
Ok I'll give them a try.
I'm also going to give ruger a call to see what they say
Thanks for your help
I had the same issue with a Ruger SRH 454 casull. My revolver had .454" cylinder throats and I ended up designing a boolit and having it cut to .455 so I could size down to what I needed. My SRH's barrel groove diameter was .451 and it shot very well with .454 cast boolits. Still use the 310 grain boolit design in my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt sized down to .452 and it is scary accurate there too.
How does one go about designing a bullet for their revolver
Easiest way is too choose a good boolit and specify the size you want.
Sure you can make them throat size but then you turn the barrel into an angry size die.
Try just sizing brass to just below the base of the boolit (neck size), then the brass will hold things straighter.
With .451" groove I don't think I would go more then .453" boolits.
I shoot groove size or up to .002" over in my .44 with large throats with no problems. My whole chambers are so large my fired brass will not enter any other gun.
Give it a go and see what you get.
Don't use a Keith, use a boolit with a proper ogive to steer at the forcing cone.

I would start here.
communicate clearly with Tom and you will get what you need.
A buddy of mine casts the lee 452 300 bullet and sizes all his to .452 maybe I should load up a couple of these and see what I can do

Like 44man said, larger is better. Usually Ruger makes tight throats, odd they would go so large on the 454 RBH. You might be fine with .0452". If you cast, you can try unsized if your mold throws a bit bigger.

That .454 is going to 'eat' at your lead stash like rats in a granary! Hope you can recover your range rounds and more to boot.

I really appreciate all the advice. What are y'alls thoughts on beagling a mold to get a bullet closer to throat size?
I'm lucky enough to be able to do all my shooting at home so lead recovery is not a problem plus having a family member who owns a tire shop doesn't hurt.
