a load of shot provided at the appropriate distance will eliminate the business end of that snake.

You would tend to snap, too, if you had that pounding headache.

Yes! They also kill coots at about 25yds while adults wait for the kid to scare the coot up so we could blast it. 10 pumps and his special pointed pellets.

My brother OTOH lives in Wyoming north of Casper and kills a couple of rattlers a week in warm weather.
His preference is 1-1/8oz of #8 in a 12ga shell, this usually results in an expanding cloud
of pink mist and snake parts.
Have a cat that wandered in through an open door and somehow never got around to leaving. That was nine years ago. She's old and arthritic and doesn't hunt anything anymore. Of course, she has a dedicated staff.

I was just thinking about how I was going to miss all those poisonous snakes since we're moving to the Laramie area until you mentioned your brother. The covenants say we can't shoot on our 35 acres, but I think it's time to think about some shotshell loads for my old Ruger .357. Or my suppressed Ruger Mk II.

    Cheers,
    Richard

Killed 3 Western Diamondbacks the first week in January on an abnormally warm day with my .177 Winchester / Daisy / Hatsan break barrel!

I use my Crossman .22 CO2 powered single shot pistol on them as well.

Unless you are planning on eating the snakes, I don't see a reason to shoot them.

A hoe works well to kill (or even just move snakes to a safer area).

This type of hoe (Ace Hardware),

    not *this* type of hoe...

or even *this* type of hoe...

Even though I would prefer using the last two examples, I suspect that would be considered more cruel to the snake than the first example.

ID:	164426When I was 5 years old in 1956 we stayed for a month on my grandfather's 40 acre hilly farm in Bristol VA. They had two plow horses, 6 milk cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, and a tobacco patch for money. No indoor plumbing, or wiring. They used kerosene lamps and cooked on a wood stove.
My mother grew up there and warned me about copperheads, cottonmouths and blue racers. I never saw a snake, but I looked for them all the time. Now when I seen a rattlesnake in MT, I poke it with my rifle. My brother always gets out a handgun and blasts them.
I have a horrible fear of snakes.

Probably will. Here in AZ I find a .22 Magnum shot shell is best for around the house. I don't think I could score a head shot with my pellet gun.
